Last week, Fondation Cartier in Paris opened their doors to a selection of works from seminal Chinese contemporary artist Yue Minjun entitled L’ombre d’un fou rire (The shadow of a laugh). Featuring nearly 40 paintings from collections around the world, as well as a set of drawings that have never been shown in public, the showing marks his first solo exhibition at a European museum. Fans who can’t get enough of his colorful characters with the signature frozen grin have several months to stop by for a look as the […]

Showing: “The Art Of The Joke” @ V1 Gallery

Earlier this month, the V1 Gallery in Copenhagen opened a new group exhibition entitled The Art Of The Joke. Curated by Kathy Grayson of The Hole, the show is a condensed version of a larger curatorial project by Kathy that will take shape next year at her showspace in New York. Spurred on by conversations with artists who did standup comedy as well as many artists who integrate humour into their works, the art show next year will turn her gallery into a comedy club. For now, […]

Showing: Anthony Lister – “Unslung Heroes” @ The Outsiders (London)

After seeding the streets of London and Newcastle with his public art, it was time for his simultaneous openings at The Outsiders locations in both cities. The new paintings and sculptures by the artist from down under were collectively entitled Unslung Heroes and were mainly loose portraits of after-party revelers, certainly something that Lister has seen plenty of with his high octane lifestyle. Take a look at some shots of the artist and the work from the London showspace below… Photo credit: Ian Cox / Wallkandy. Discuss these shows here. Discuss Anthony Lister here.

Upcoming: Aya Takano – “Heaven Is Inside Of You” @ Galerie Perrotin (Hong Kong)

After her showing at the Perrotin space in Paris during the summer (covered), Aya Takano will be following up with a solo at the Hong Kong location. Opening tomorrow (or tonight for fans in the Asia timezones), Heaven Is Inside Of You is a collection of paintings featuring her slender child-women characters dressed in traditional wear and floating through the landscapes of different continents. Like many artists from Japan, the catastrophic earthquake that struck last year has deeply affected Takano. She states: “I have, since then, as if unearthing them […]

Studio Visits: Paul Insect – “Out of Chaos” @ Opera Gallery (NYC)

Next Thursday, November 29th, Paul Insect will make his New York City solo debut with Opera Gallery. Entitled Out of Chaos, this exhibition is a fresh series of works projecting a world spinning out of control with visions of helplessness, but also a sense of hope as one emerges from the storm. Using art as a tool to capture and analyze the maelstrom of marketing and pop iconography, Mr. Insect gives the Big Apple a taste of his unique artistic perspective and humor. In preparation […]

Upcoming: ROA – “Carrion” @ Backwoods Gallery

After his show in September in San Francisco (covered), street muralist and amateur zoologist ROA will be hitting up the other side of the globe with his latest solo exhibition. Held at the Backwoods Gallery in Melbourne, with the opening scheduled for November 30th, Carrion will explore the friction between man, animal, civilization and nature through the Belgium-based artist’s signature anatomical and interactive style. Also available will be 25 copies of his limited edition book to coincide with the opening. Discuss ROA here.

Showing: Aron Wiesenfeld @ Arcadia Gallery

Earlier this month in New York, painter and illustrator Aron Wiesenfeld presented a new body of work at the Arcadia Gallery, site of his last solo in 2011 (covered). Featuring a series of intense new paintings, the cinematic imagery explored gives us a glimpse into Wiesenfeld’s desolate world and brooding environments. One can’t help but be drawn to the emotions and tensions that are evident when seeing his work up close. Stop by and see for yourself before the show close on November 24th. Discuss this show here. Openings: AJ Fosik – “Lamplighter to the Promised Land” @ Guerrero Gallery

Last weekend, AM stopped by San Francisco’s Guerrero Gallery to check out opening of Lamplighter to the Promised Land that features AJ Fosik’s latest wooden sculptures. We visited Fosik a few weeks back at his Portland studio while he was preparing for the show (which can be viewed here). With this exhibition, he created sculptures to portray creatures in a glorified manner that challenges the concept of belief as a virtue – in other words, they are trippy/bad-ass beasts. Check out more photos from the […]

Showing: Know Hope – “The Weight” @ Known Gallery

Last week, the Known Gallery in Los Angeles welcomed the Israel-based Know Hope in to display new works as well as create an installation for their showspace. Entitled The Weight, the new paintings and sculptural compositions touched on the subject of the burdens we have and how we manage them. Along with glimpses of his spindly characters, the poetic musings seen in his street work also made the trip over on minimalistic pieces on the side of the gallery. Take a look in the photos below… Discuss Know Hope here.
