Streets: Phlegm (New York)

Sheffiield-based street muralist Phlegm recently made a trip out to New York and it looks like he brought along instruments of his trade as he put up multiple murals in Manhattan at the Fulton housing project on West 17th. Featuring his intricate imagery, the pieces follow his characters as they handle enigmatic and complex contraptions and gadgets. Jen Stark for “40 Under 40: Craft Futures” @ Smithsonian

Expert paper sculpture artisan Jen Stark recently had one of her pieces acquired by the Smithsonian American Art Museum for their permanent collection. The psychedelic multicolored piece which looks like it is dripping down the wall is entitled Power of Being and is part of the 40 Under 40: Craft Futures exhibition currently underway at the Renwick Gallery part of the institution which also includes a piece from Olek (mentioned earlier). Releases: Jeff Soto – “Seeker Friends #5: The Guitarist”

Next Thursday, August 2nd, sees another release from the Seeker Friends series of prints from Jeff Soto (interviewed). The fifth in the line is entitled The Guitarist and again will be sized at 6 x 6″ and cost $25 + shipping with $1 of every sale going to plant one tree through the Plant A Billion Trees program. Streets: World Roundup (July 16 – 22)

Leading off last week’s Streets: World Roundup is this amazing mural (seen above) painted over the course of a year by Josef Kristofoletti. The project was commissioned by the ATLAS Experiment at CERN, the European Organization for Nuclear Research and was painted on the side of the ATLAS control room directly above the detector, near the Swiss-French border outside of Geneva by the Texas-based artist. James Jean for Black Dog / RSA

Los Angeles-based painter James Jean (featured), who recently took part in shows in both Beverly Hills, London, New York, and Orange County, found time in his busy schedule to collaborate with Black Dog & RSA Films. Featured here are two of the final versions along with the exquisite concept sketch, but also check out one of the initial designs that did not make the cut on his blog here. Last Friday evening, Mike Giant opened his latest show, Confessions of an Old Dirty Skateboarder at FFDG. The show consisted of new drawings on paper (in his signature clean and precise style done with a Sharpie), Skater Girl photograph prints, as well as an installation of the artist’s personal skate deck collection that serves as a retrospective of the designs he has done over the years. Last year WK Interact took to the streets of Paris to share his hardcore style with the folks in France “occupying” the streets. Then, he created a special spread for the inside of Wired Magazine. Now, he’s continuing the series of work with a special duo-colored screen print entitled Struggle with Jonathan LeVine Gallery. It’s signed & numbered by the artist and limited to an edition of 25. Last week, New York’s New Museum opened a new exhibition entitled Ghost in the Machine. The survey contains over 140 works of art by over 70 artists which explore the relationship between humans, machines and art. Taking over all three main gallery rooms, it providee a unique look at the digital age and its influence/interaction on the artistic movement.
