The strong new body of work includes both paintings, detailed drawings, and concept sketches all featuring her light and deft touch with imagery bringing to mind beautiful illustrations that would fit on the cover of your favorite fantasy novel, but more refined and detailed. Tonight at LeBasse Projects in the Los Angeles Chinatown, Melissa Haslam (featured) will be presenting a new body of work that promises an increased attention to detail and realism as she continues to refine her technique. Drawing her inspiration from the Japanese subculture of fashioning oneself to look like stuffed animals or Kigurumi, the Australia-based painter uses this metaphor to explore ideas social role-playing. At the beginning of this year, we brought you photos of the pop-up location of TOYKIO Gallery & café while they worked feverishly to get their main space set up for their official launch. Last week, AM went along to the opening night at Tony’s, London, to grab some pics and get a feel of East London’s Burning Candy exhibition A Fist full of Paint. Knowing the exterior had been brilliantly tagged with a paint filled fire extinguisher, it was good to see the interior had been done in the same style. A couple of weeks back AM went along to take a look at Meggs‘ first London solo exhibition entitled Inner Demons. Hosted by Zero Cool at pop-up space Red Bull Studios, Meggs pulled together a collection of work from the many facets of his output using a combination of paintings, sculpture, assemblage and an intense installation comprising a demonic masked figure seated amidst a variety of porn, hooker calling cards, spent blunts, Chinese hell money, a crack pipe and emptied bottles of alcohol. Every Thing Must Go (previewed), the new Charming Baker pop-up show in London’s Covent Garden opened on Thursday 7 July. It was a well-organised, confidently-run operation on the night. Guests were looked after by a tag-team of hosts including the artist himself, his manager Tim Fennell, Pat Magnarella and Roger Klein of Pat Magnarella Management, and the Jealous Gallery crew.
