Streets: Nick Walker’s “Cardinal Sinister” in London

It looks like Bristol stencilist Nick Walker (interviewed) was up at the crack of dawn this morning to hit up a prominent spot in London outside the Royal College of Art / Royal Albert Hall with this piece entitled “Cardinal Sinister”. Walker is bang on topic with his rendition of Pope Benedict XVI stoking a white cat à la Bond villain Blofeld, who’s arrival in the apparently “third world” UK this week has sparked tension in some and indifference in others. Britain may largely be […]

Video: Ryan McGinley – “Friends Forever”

The warm weather season is almost over.  We know what’s been on everyone’s mind: “what sort of magical goodness has Ryan McGinley been creating for us this summer?”  Well, we can now start answering that question.  The talented artist went to the Pitchfork Music Festival and documented his two favorite bands on camera.  Smith Westerns and Girls are the subjects of this intimate film.  It’s a wonderful experience with fantastic music, fun-loving youngsters, and beautiful scenes. Check it out for yourself after the jump…

Openings: Esao Andrews – “Solid Void” @ Jonathan Levine Gallery

On Saturday, Esao Andrews opened up his latest exhibition at Jonathan Levine Gallery with a new body of work consisting of some of his largest paintings to date. Utilizing his signature mix of creative story telling and darkly laid out characters/compositions, Mr. Andrews entertained the audience with a rich and complex show. Some paintings are hauntingly beautiful while others deceptively twisted. Regardless of your initial impression, it’s always worth it to take a second look at his works. You’ll be as surprised as us on […]

“Art in the Streets” Exhibition @ MOCA Confirmed by Deitch

Ever since the Deitch appointment at MOCA was announced, it was a question of not if, but when a major street art exhibition was coming to Los Angeles. Well, yesterday, Jeffrey Deitch confirms that indeed, come 2011, “the first major museum survey of the history of graffiti and street art presented in the United States” will be opening it’s doors to the public. With curatorial help from Aaron Rose, Roger Gastman and Fab 5 Freddy, works from more than a hundred street artists, including Banksy, […]

Streets: New Banksy x 3

Some new pieces from Banksy recently popped up on Wooster Collective yesterday at undisclosed locations although somewhere in the UK is a pretty good bet. Playing on some pretty classic themes we have come to expect from Mr. B, these street pieces with presumably no strings attached remind us of why we love the elusive street artist. More after the jump…
