Streets: Anthony Lister (Los Angeles)

Hitting the streets of Los Angeles once again, Anthony Lister (filmed) spent time getting up all over town the last couple weeks leading up to his current show at New Image Art. Showing his versatility with the roller and spraycans, working day and night, the Australian vandal left one of his signature ballerinas at Superchief Gallery as well as his take on police brutality (seen above). Recap: Forest For The Trees (Portland) – Part I

With most of the Forest For The Trees murals finished, now’s the time to do the first part of our recap of this year’s event (also see 2013, 2014). The name of the mural festival comes from the phrase “they can’t see the forest for the trees” which signifies the inability to understand the greater picture when you’re too focused solely on what’s in front of you. Organizers Gage Hamilton and Matt Wagner of Hellion Gallery hope that the art will draw Portland’s residents away from their daily routine. Enjoy some photos […]

With his outdoor installation currently on view in New York (covered), Jose Parla will be offering fans in the Big Apple more opportunities to see his work come September 12th. On Saturday night, he will be opening shows simultaneously at the Bryce Wolkowitz and Mary Boone galleries in Chelsea collectively entitled Surface Body / Action Space. He further states – “The title and concept of Surface Body / Action Space serves as a metaphor for the language of my new paintings and sculptures. The works negotiate two, sometimes four modes of thinking, linking artistic […]

Openings: Mark Jenkins – “Still Life” @ Fabien Castanier Gallery

Over the weekend, a solo from Mark Jenkins (interviewed) opened at the Fabien Castanier Gallery in Los Angeles entitled Still Life. Aptly named, the exhibition featured mostly the American artist’s satirical and clever use of human forms as his form of art. Mirroring his street works, viewers can often time be taken unawares when thinking that his installations are actual people. Also seen are three-dimensional canvases as well as some of the tape sculptures that were his original claim to fame. Photo credit: Theonepointeight. Discuss Mark Jenkins here.

Previews: El Mac – “Objects at Rest” @ Galerie Wolfsen

With this exhibition, the graffiti artist and painter that is primarily known for his unique figurative large murals, is for the first time showing his pencil studies and drawings. El Mac’s unmistakable line work is instantly recognizable whether you’re looking at his larger than life wall pieces, paintings, or rare editions he released over the years. No matter […]

Streets: Aaron Li Hill – “Rise and Fall” (Berlin)

Recently in Berlin, Aaron Li-Hill (interviewed) finished up a sweet mural for the One Wall Project organized by Urban Nation. Entitled Rise and Fall, the new piece takes inspiration from the greek goddess of victory as well as the film Wings of Desire, both sourced from the background of the capital city. Navigating 24 windows on the facade of the building measuring five stories high, the wall painted ended up being Li-Hill’s largest one to date. The American artist further explains these fallen angels – “Based on two source points, […]
