Jose Parla – “Signature Roots” @ Portland Art Museum / Wieden+Kennedy

José Parlá, who recently finished a mural at the James B. Hunt Library at North Carolina State University, continues his work with institutes of higher learning with a new project in Porland. Working with students from Caldera Arts who participated in a painting and writing workshop the Brooklyn-based artist put on at the Portland Art Museum, a new large scale installation (8 feet tall by 70 feet) was created entitled Signature Roots. The title alludes to the students’ names and stories that were written into the layers of the mural which […]

Releases: Shepard Fairey – “Ai Weiwei” Print

It looks like Shepard Fairey (featured) has created a new print as a tribute to Ai Weiwei ahead of the Chinese artist’s show opening soon at the Brooklyn Museum. The portrait is created with Shep’s signature style and features a gash on the activist-artist’s scalp alluding to his time in the Chinese police’s hands back in 2010. As a result of that incident, AWW’s passport was confiscated and he has been unable to travel, including to show openings like the upcoming one in New York. The edition is created […]

Streets: JR (Germany)

Earlier this month, we shared some shots of work from artist JR (interviewed) from his solo at Museum Frieder Burda in Baden-Baden, Germany. Not surprisingly, while there, the French “photograffeur” spent time on the streets working on new pieces to share with the public. Continuing the concepts of his UNFRAMED project, he visited residents in the area and chose some of their photos to paste up, exploring the city’s history as the link between Germany and France. Streets: Maya Hayuk – Bowery & Houston Mural (Part II)

Last month, AM caught up with Brooklyn based artist Maya Hayuk as she braved the polar vortex conditions that have plagued NYC all winter. Spending more than a week hand painting the entire Bowery and Houston mural with her signature style, she was finally able to completed her visual contribution to the iconic New York street corner. Sadly, a week later some vandals defaced her work, but Maya did return to reverse their damage soon after. Check out more photos of the mural fresh after completion below… […]
