Openings: José Parlá – “Diary of Brooklyn” @ Barclays Center

Just short of two weeks ago, José Parlá announced he was working on a mural titled Diary of Brooklyn, commissioned by Brooklyn’s newest arena-style concert venue and home to the Brooklyn Nets, The Barclay’s Center. This gigantic piece is the largest to date from break-out urban landscape artist José Parlá, measuring a whopping 10 x 70 feet. Streets: Phlegm (London)

It seems the Sheffiled-based Phlegm has headed south again to London for another mural. This newest piece is on the Village Underground wall on Holywell Lane and features some of the long legged creatures he has been painting as of late (see here), as well as one of his classic characters catching a ride. On January 25th, Dan Witz will be making his solo debut with Lazarides at their Rathbone gallery in London. The multi-talented painter and street artist will be sharing paintings from his Prisoner and Mosh Pit series as well as plans to paint one of his prisoner’s images onto London phone boxes. Fans of the NY-based artist will be familiar with his renderings of the frenetic and crowded environment in mosh pits (most recently seen at a New York showing in 2011), but the Prisoner series might be less familiar. For those of you who have been following the street murals from RIME (aka Jersey Joe), you will have seen some of the luscious caricatured females that make it into his imagery (i.e.: here and here). As you would expect, many of these characters make it onto the pages of his sketchbook before going up on the walls – a glimpse of which we can see posted to his instagram account in recent days. Streets: Jorge Rodríguez-Gerada – “Terrestrial Series / Mama Cash” (Amsterdam)

Jorge Rodríguez-Gerada was recently invited to Amsterdam to work on a piece for the International Human Rights Day that helped to launch Vogelvrije Vrouwen (Defend women who defend human rights!). This campaign raises awareness to the plight of Mesoamerican women who are illegally targeted and terrorized for defending human rights in that region and was commissioned by feminist foundation Mama Cash. The large-scale land portrait that spanned almost two football fields (created with the help of 80 volunteers) is part of the Cuban American artist’s ongoing Terrestrial Series. He states […]

It’s time to start winding down our Basel Week Miami coverage here on AM with another look at the PULSE art fair (highlights here). For this week’s video Rewind, we start things off with news that starting Wednesday and running through Feb. 5, about 3,000 New York City taxis will feature a 30-second video from Ryan McGinley.
