One of the stories dominating AM of recent weeks has been the behind-the-scenes look at Cai Guo-Qiang and his Sky Ladder exhibition opening today at the LA MOCA. Imagine an abandoned four storey supermarket in the North of Paris occupied by squatters, then deserted again. On August 12, 2010, French graffiti artists Lek and Sowat discovered the place much to their delight. For a year, in the greatest of secrets, both artists continuously wandered in this 430,000 sq ft monument to paint murals and organize an illegal artistic residency. After hitting up Paris with some street work (covered) back in February, Nick Walker (interviewed) has return for more. One of the walls (seen above) he painted was a mirror image of the piece he submitted for the Fifty Fifty group show that opened last week at Parisian showspace Mathgoth Galerie. AM recently attended the Olek’s latest show at New York City’s Krause Gallery. Yes, we said NYC. The rogue urban crocheter was out on bail from the UK and returned to her hometown to do a show with David Peterson entitled Synthetic Nature. For this special event, Olek ditched her signature yarn and utilized balloons. Using synthetic rubber, she built an cave installation by weaving semi-inflated balloons in a way that would make even Krusty the Clown blush. RISK Paints Santa Monica Home

You may remember last year September, we told you about Risk and Retna (featured) collaborating on painting a house in Santa Monica. That controversial project raised money and awareness for the Heal the Bay Foundation, but drew the wrath of neighbors and resulted some drama and threatened fines from city officials. This time, developer Adam Corlin has commissioned only RISK to cover a new property, minus the scaffolding, with his distinctive abstract style. Look for a more revealing look in May in conjunction with RISK’s upcoming solo show. Discuss Risk here.

Last weekend, the Corey Helford Gallery played host to the opening of the Natalia Fabia (interviewed) curated show Hookers. With the theme in mind, her artist friends including Kent Williams, Michael Hussar, Phil Hale, Erik Sandberg, Saber, REVOK, and more created pieces for the show that showed a diversity of mediums and range of artistic vision. Tomorrow night (April 4th), Mathgoth Galerie in Paris will be opening their Fifty Fifty group exhibition. For this showing, artists were asked to work with 50 x 50 cm canvases to create whatever they wanted. Nick Walker (interviewed) sent over a look at what he submitted, but if you are in town you may want to also check out what C215, Cope2, Cornbread, Crash, Labrona, L’Atlas, Smash137, Tilt, Zevs, and more have contributed.
