ESPO & Faile for New York Magazine

For those of you who have seen the annual “Best of New York” issue from New York Magazine at the newsstands, you may or may not have recognized the design. This year’s cover artist is none other than Steve “ESPO” Powers. Like the WK Interact cover for Wired Magazine that didn’t end up happening, sometimes it’s nice to see what could have been. The other two finalists were Faile and The Heads Of State. See their designs after the jump…

Streets: World Roundup (March 5 – March 11)

Starting off this week’s roundup is this new stencil from Bast seen on the streets of New York. This is the first we have shown you from him since his collaboration with Aiko at the end of last year. As a way to pay tribute to those who have passed, artist often paint murals in remembrance of their friends who have fallen along the way. After a recent fitting piece in collaboration with Augustine Kofie (featured) to remember DASH 2000, a former member of the UTI (Under The Influence) graffiti crew, El Mac has now painted one for Marcos “Verse” Vasquez in Mid-City, Los Angeles. Flying Murals of Wynwood

You may remember some photos that Futura sent us that we shared with you last month painted for Art Wynwood. That large painting, along with work from Retna, How & Nosm, DAZE, and Aiko was destined to be displayed at the Miami fair last weekend above as part of the flying murals of Wynwood project over the VIP lounge area. Sometimes it’s hard to remember that busy international traveler and prolific street muralist ROA is from Belgium based on so many of his works popping up around the world (most recently in Stockholm). We can finally show you something painted in his home country (for the the generically named Street Art Festival) with again some nice incorporation of architectural elements into the piece (windows used as the perch). After spending some time with LA artist RETNA (featured) as he put his mark on the iconic Bowery & Houston wall in New York (covered here), AM headed back to see the finishing touches. As you can see, the MSK writer’s calligraphy is getting increasingly complex and is undecipherable for those who aren’t in the know. Last month, German duo Herakut arrived in Los Angeles for a special exhibition highlighting their work not only with paintings but also with sculptures, photography and installations. Held at Lebasse Projects in Chinatown, the show also coincided with the release of their book After The Laughter which chronicles their work together during the past number of years.
