POW WOW ’12: Preview

Besides all the walls being beautified around industrial district of Kaka’ako in Hawaii, Loft In Space will also be opening up a gallery show tonight (6-10pm) that will put the indoor skills of each artist to the test. Besides some canvas pieces from most POW WOW participants, two other side projects will open on the second floor of the showspace. Eugene Kan of Hypebeast has curated a photography exhibition titled Day Job? and Arktip magazine has created a pop up shop specifically for the show. […]

Opening tonight at the White Walls Gallery tonight in San Francisco will be a charity show benefiting the Oceanic Awareness Collaboration. The Art on the Move auction features originals and limited editions from a long list of artists including Brian Viveros, Shepard Fairey, Peter Gronquist, Jacub Gagnon, Luke Chueh, Charlie Immer, Pedro Matos, and more. Across from Loft In Space, the neighboring wall was attacked by 123Klan, Slick, and Flying Fortress for some of the outdoor portion go POW WOW. Almost completed, the piece features elements specific to Hawaii like their love for shaved ice, volcanoes, and orchids to more serious topics like how Dole Pineapple has affected the indigenous people. An interesting juxtaposition of old masters like imagery and modern text abbreviation – this series of paintings from Shawn Huckins is our Art Focus for the week. The premise for this particular set of works is Huckins’ view of the history of the United States as bookended by two revolutions – one being political in the 18th century and the other being technological in the 21st century. Returning to NY for a showing at Gering & López, site of his show in early 2010, Street Market alumni Todd James will be presenting a whole new body of work on March 1st. King of the Wild Frontier will no doubt feature the artist otherwise known as REAS’ signature colorful and sardonic takes on various topics including perhaps politics and war. Last night, AM attended the early viewing of Brian Donnelly’s (a.k.a. KAWS) latest museum exhibition Downtime and artist talk at the High Museum of Art in Atlanta. The impressive multi-level showcase featured both old and new works from the Brooklyn based artist. Late last month, four members of the arts community came together at the Chateau Marmont for a special book signing event featuring 3D Art Book. Tristan Eaton, Shepard Fairey, James Jean, and Gary Baseman were in attendance to sign the book for both fans of the book and of their work.
