Openings: Jean Labourdette (Turf One) – “The Rising” @ Jonathan Levine Gallery

Opening a several weeks ago alongside SHAG (covered) at Jonathan Levine Gallery was Jean Labourdette (Turf One). The self taught French-Canadian artist created a great show he named “The Rising”. Utilizing numerous found objects on which he painted on, Jean worked to create interactive pieces for the viewers. What we enjoyed in particular were the realistic subjects which which were effortlessly integrated into their respective backdrops. Check out the full show after the jump.

Brooklyn-based artist José Parlá, who stopped the show with one of his magnificent street-inspired calligraphic works at OHWOW’s It Ain’t Fair exhibit (covered) during Art Basel Week last month, will be unveiling a new publication next month, entitled Walls, Diaries, and Paintings. It looks like Ray Caesar will be part of a group of artists participating in the upcoming “In The Nursery” group show at Corey Helford Gallery. All the work in the show, like this exquisite piece (seen above) from the master of the digital arts, will focus on the themes of childhood, birth, and nursery art. On occasion of his inclusion in Spoke Art’s Urban Osmosis exhibition (which we previewed last week), the Los Angeles-based Shark Toof made the much-traveled trek north to the Bay Area. Jesse Hazelip (studio visit here), has a new show opening up next week at the San Francisco gallery, 941 Geary. Following his massive installation last year at White Walls, Hazelip looks to go even bigger and better in the larger museum-quality space as judged by Colin Day’s beautiful video above.

Streets: ROA (Salten Sea)

It look like while ROA was in Los Angeles for his pop-up show (covered), he found time to take a little detour to the Salten Sea. While there, the Belgium artist painted a fish in his signature style to mark his passage. It certainly is a telling piece as the fertilizer runoff combined with the increasing salinity is certainly threatening the survival much of the fish species there. Last week, the Japanese American Nation Museum hosted “Zen Garage”, a small exhibition featuring some custom vehicles from Shinya Kimura, Giant Robot’s Eric Nakamura (interviewed), and David Choe (featured). The highlight for us was Choe’s custom monster Scion xB showcasing some of his signature artwork on its body and his love for the drums in the back.
