A couple Saturdays ago, Show & Tell Gallery played host to a cohesive group show from Kevin Cyr (interviewed), Mike Shankman, Jeff Gillette, Joshua Barndt, and Alex Lukas entitled Atrophic Existence. Along with some pretty nice pieces from a group of painters whose work focuses on urban decay and disintegration, Gillette also brought some beautiful sculptural renderings of his shantytown structures and you could not miss the massive central installation from Barndt entitled The World is a Mountain and Everything Gets Buried. Openings: Kid Zoom – “This City Will Eat Me Alive” @ Opera (NYC Pop-Up)

AM recently caught the opening night of Kid Zoom’s first ever US solo show This City Will Eat Me Alive. The large pop-up space opened by the Opera Gallery in the the hip meat packing district was a great setting to showcase KZ’s large size paintings. Just as we previewed in our recent studio visit, Kid Zoom utilized his signature spray techniques to create the works that delighted fans who made it out to see this body of work. KAWS Giant Companion Comes to Aldrich Contemporary

It appears KAWS has gifted the Northeast with a Giant Companion for the Holiday Season. First featured during his Hong Kong exhibit, Passing Through (covered), the 16 foot fiberglass sculpture has concluded a long journey to the US by settling down on the snowy lawn of The Aldrich Contemporary Museum, where it joined the rest of the work already on display for the artist’s first museum solo exhibition (covered). Last Thursday night, AM was on hand for one of the most exciting openings we’ve ever experienced: Dennis Mcnett’s Reaping Waves and Vital Vessels at the Joshua Liner Gallery. It looks like JR has uploaded more tantalizing extracts from his Women Are Heroes movie that debuted at Cannes Film Festival earlier this year. Part of the street photographer’s 28 Millimètres project, this film chronicles his efforts to bring attention to the plight of downtrodden women everywhere by pasting up large-scale photos in an urban setting (see Paris). One of the highlights of the Scope Art Fair this year was the booth from LA’s Corey Helford Gallery. From the moment we stepped foot in area, we noticed a plethora of art from some AM’s favorites like as Luke Chueh, D*Face, Chloe Early, Ron English, Natalia Fabia, Korin Faught, Eric Joyner, Brandi Milne, Sylvia Ji and Shag. It looks like Judith Supine was recently in Los Angeles for a visit. While in town, he took time to throw up several of his signature “green skinned” collaged pieces including one that was put in New Image Art’s show (covered) in Miami for Art Basel Week. Last Saturday, Guererro Gallery hosted the opening for an exhibition featuring two artists who are truly masters at their craft: Mike Giant and Adam 5100 (previewed). Both artists displayed work not typically found in their previous exhibitions, which gave the show a more personal feel. Mike Giant (who was occasionally spotted riding around outside the gallery on his bicycle) displayed his usual crisp Sharpie work on paper, as well as works on canvas done with One Shot enamel, intricate tracings on paper, and collages featuring […]
