Streets: Banksy in NY (Part II)

As we suspected after seeing the first couple pieces from Banksy in NY, he wasn’t done with the Big Apple yet. Looks like several other pieces have popped up in various locales such as Soho and Chinatown, although you’ll have to be quick if you want to see these in person as haters have been defacing them almost immediately. More images after the jump…

“Heroes & Villians” Book

Ever wonder how your favorite artist looks in person (like the beautiful Liz McGrath seen above)? Well, unless you live LA, Miami, SF, NY, or London, then chances are slim that you will get to meet them at an art show or event. While most people focus on the art, “Heroes & Villians” photographers Roman Cho and Tatiana Wills decided to center their attention on the actual artists themselves. And now that they have signed a deal with ZERO+ Publishing, hopefully you will get a […]

Art Stars – Polo Jeans Project

Starting early this year, Polo Jeans Co. Ralph Lauren began commissioning artists all over Europe to customize star shaped “canvases” made from denim. This list includes many artists that readers of AM will be familiar with including Matt Small (interviewed), Pam Glew, Pedro Matos, Herakut (interviewed), Delta, and Case. With the stars and stripes flag as inspiration, the artists created some pretty fantastic pieces that will appear in Polo Jeans Co. stores as well as all together in an exhibition in London at the end […]

Interview: Zilda

French artist Zilda’s classically influenced street work are inspired by old books and works of the master painters and sculptors of the past. With such a wealth of material to refer to, it was somewhat surprising to find out that his work is all originally hand-painted. We talked about his history, technique, and future,  among other things in our interview – all after the jump.

Openings: Os Gemeos – “Pra quem mora lá, o céu é lá” @ Museu Colecção Berardo

Os Gemeos unleashed their latest show across the Atlantic in Portugal named “Pra quem mora lá, o céu é lá” (To who lives there, heaven is there). From the looks of this exhibition hosted in Lisbon’s Museu Colecção Berardo, it appears to be as heavenly as the title indicates. Fans of the twins from São Paulo were greeted with another indoor haven for street art and music lovers. From floor to ceiling, Os Gemeos worked to paint and install interactive sculptures, installations and paintings that hooked […]

Preview: Ludo – “Do Androids Dream Of Electrik Sheep?” @ Electrik Sheep

*This show has actually been cancelled* Parisian street artist LUDO recently sent us preview images of some pieces he is working for his upcoming solo show at the Electrik Sheep Gallery. As he mentioned in his interview with us back in February, he will be exhibiting in Newcastle with a body of work entitled “Do Androids Dream Of Electrik Sheep?” The opening is June 3rd – make sure you stop by if you are in the area to check out “Nature’s Revenge” for yourself. More […]

Streets: Conor Harrington & Know Hope in Israel

So it turns out the mural we got a hint of earlier from Conor Harrington (interviewed) was in Israel. Looks like he teamed up with Know Hope to put up some pretty sick pieces. And it looks like he’s not done yet as he looks to tackle the Israel-Palestine wall. More pics after the jump…

Preview: Logan Hicks, Anthony Lister, and Michael Kalish @ Opera Gallery (NY)

Logan Hicks (interviewed), Anthony Lister’s (interviewed), and Michael Kalish are teaming up for a three person show opening this week (May 19th) at the Opera Gallery in New York. Hicks will be bringing some new stencils including what appear to be some more minimalistic work. Lister looks to be exhibiting some older works and Kalish (whom we are not familiar with) is contributing some pop icon pieces constructed partially with license plates. Preview images after the jump…

Video: JR – “Women Are Heroes” Movie

As we mentioned in a previous post, French photographer JR’s film “Women Are Heroes” has been selected for the 63rd Cannes Film Festival. Bringing his project full circle, the movie documents his travels around the world photographing victimized and impoverished women and then pasting them up in their own neighborhoods and towns, sending a powerful message of hope and strength. Take a look at a special print made available for this occasion as well as other planned screening dates after the jump…

Streets: Banksy in NY

After a whirlwind tour (summarized here) of North America to promote his film, Banksy has finally reached the one city that has been conspicuously missing from his itinerary – New York, the so-called birthplace of modern graffiti. Strange that the visit does not coincide with the actual movie premiere in NY several weeks ago, but with two stencils that have been discovered so far, there are bound to be more so stay tuned. The one above is a clever variant of the piece Mr. B […]
