Upcoming / Streets: Vhils – “Devoid” @ Lazarides (Rathbone Place)

With the general opening set for November 29th, Lazarides (Rathbone Place) is ready to present Vhils’ (filmed) first solo with the gallery in over three years. Devoid will be the Portuguese artist’s most comprehensive show to date and feature work that examines the relationship between the individual and the overwhelming force of urban environments, sourcing much of his materials from derelict spaces in the city. Many of the new pieces will reference projects the forceful street agent completed in 2012 in places like Shanghai, Paris, the favelas of Rio and […]

Overtime: Nov 19 – Nov 25

Overtime stories of the week: Phlegm working through possible covers for his new book. RIP: Arnaud Maggs, who died at the age of 86. Congratulations: Julian Schnabel and The Hole’s May Andersen get engaged. An insightful look at the market for Damien Hirst works and how he may have damaged it with his actions. Sotheby’s posted a pre-tax loss of $46.4m, representing a 58% fall in net profits for first nine months of year. Per ArtTactic, confidence in the Chinese contemporary art market declines as […]

Streets: Mear One (Los Angeles)

Another day, another impressive mural from Mear One (interviewed). This latest wall is located in Culver City and features some of the apocalyptical-illuminati imagery that is often seen in his work as well as puts the LA-based street artist’s top-notch technical skills on display. This piece was part of series of works in support for Prop 37 leading up to the election and the fight for labeling of genetically modified foods (see video below for more info). Studio Visits: Paul Insect – “Out of Chaos” @ Opera Gallery (NYC)

Next Thursday, November 29th, Paul Insect will make his New York City solo debut with Opera Gallery. Entitled Out of Chaos, this exhibition is a fresh series of works projecting a world spinning out of control with visions of helplessness, but also a sense of hope as one emerges from the storm. Using art as a tool to capture and analyze the maelstrom of marketing and pop iconography, Mr. Insect gives the Big Apple a taste of his unique artistic perspective and humor. In preparation […]

Openings: Futura, Matta, Phase 2 & Rammellzee – “Deep Space” @ Joseph Nahmad

Joseph Nahmad, known for his pop-up events, recently presented a group show in New York’s Meatpacking district with Nemo Librizzi (who curated Futura’s recent showing at Valmorbida). Entitled Deep Space, this exhibition featured four noted street & graffiti legends Futura, Phase 2, Matta and Rammellzee. Using an interesting approach, this show was not just a collection of freshly made works but was instead a mini survey of old and new works from each of the four artists. The exhibition examined the historical journey of each artist and […]

Overtime: Nov 12 – Nov 18

Overtime stories of the week: Excerpts from Patti Astor’s (FUN Gallery) new memoir. Astor and Futura pictured – image © Anita Rosenberg. RIP William Turnbull, who died at age 90. Hot art market for South African works a contributing factor to big $2 mil. heist. Few days later, four of the five stolen paintings found on a bench in a cemetery in Port Elizabeth. Brian Ramnarine indicted on charges he used Jasper Johns’s mold to make unauthorized bronze sculpture. Met Museum being sued over misleading […]

Streets: Mike Stilkey (Los Angeles)

Mike Stilkey sent us some flicks of a recent mural he painted in Los Angeles. The 13 x 14 foot mural was painted outside of a photography studio in La Brea. We like how this furry guy brightens up his new home, and how his camera nods towards what’s inside the premises. Stilkey’s murals never fail to disappoint! Discuss Mike Stilkey here.

Streets: How & Nosm on Bowery & Houston (Part II)

Right after super storm Sandy rolled through NYC, we brought you an inside look at the famous Bowery & Houston wall as twins How & Nosm worked industriously to make their mark on this landmark mural location. Now, we can bring you some photos of the completed piece which utilized their signature red & gray-scale color palettes. From the looks of things, the brothers got into a real nice groove layering detail upon detail into mural, which in the end seemed to flow together seamlessly. Along with […]

Streets: Anthony Lister (Newcastle)

After sharing Anthony Lister (filmed) work on the streets of London, here are now photos of some walls he painted in Newcastle as he ramps up for his simultaneous exhibitions opening on Friday (November 16th) at the Outsiders in both cities. Unslung Heroes is the title for the new paintings and sculptures as the Aussie street artist gets ready to be the the first to occupy both Outsiders locations since David Choe made his UK debut in 2008. Streets: Le 4eme MUR 2012 – Recap

After reporting on Escif’s murals for Le 4eme MUR last year (here & here), we now have a recap of the 2012 edition. The festival’s name (translated to “the fourth wall”) is a theater expression that symbolizes a virtual wall between the actor and the public which can apparently also be applied to the work of the street artist and his audience. This year’s lineup includes a return of Escif along with Mr Jago, Vhils (above), Tellas, Ericailcane, and 108. Check out more photos below…
