Rewind: Nov 5 – 11

Leading off this week’s Rewind of art videos is a sweet film from Andrew Telling documenting Conor Harrington’s (interviewed) trip to Vardø, Norway for Komafest (covered). Streets: JR (Japan)

After working on a particularly poignant mural in Washingon DC, JR has headed to the Far East to spread his Inside Out love. Going mobile with his giant photo booth in a converted truck, the French photograffeur has been traveling though Japan with his crew and local volunteers, focusing especially in areas hit by the devastating tsunami which still have not completely recovered over on year out. If you remember, AM last hung out with Anthony Lister while he was busy getting up and putting on shows in Los Angeles (see video here). The Australian artist is now set to open simultaneous exhibitions next weekend at both Lazarides the Outsiders locations – London & Newcastle. Unslung Heroes will feature portraits of after-party revelers, rendered in his loose style mainly in a red, black and white color palette as well as some sculptural works. This week’s Streets: World Roundup feature is headlined by a new mural (photo by Lois Stavsky) in New York City by Ron English, who worked overtime to finish it before Hurricane Sandy hit. The piece (on Mulberry Street between Canal and Hester in New York’s Little Italy) depicting his Temper Tot character is a English’s first mural in Manhattan in about 25 years as part of The New York Comedy Festival and Vandalog’s series of indoor and outdoor installations collectively titled The Art of Comedy. The other weekend, AM swung by Oakland-based painter/illustrator Mike Sutfin’s studio as he was putting the final touches to his Creeping Nomadic show at Grass Hut in Portland that runs til November 30th. The show features a series of small oil paintings on board (none of which are digitally colored!), ink illustrations, t-shirts, and hand-painted versions of his toy, Battle Man and Battle Rat (which were painted by him and other artists). AJ Fosik’s sculptural artworks almost need no introduction. In a world where it is increasingly difficult to have a true individual voice as an artist, Fosik’s work has an original aesthetic honed over the years from his roots in graffiti, street art and two-dimensional drawing.
