Basel Week Miami ’09 – Tatiana Suarez @ Primary Flight

While at this year’s Art Basel and Primary Flight, one of our goals here at AM was not just to bring you great on-site coverage of your favorite artists, but also to find, discover, and help promote the next batch of young and exciting artists ready to make a splash on the scene.  AM is proud to present to you Tati Suarez, a 26 year old Miami artist, though soon to be Brooklynite, who caught our attention quietly painting in a tucked away corner of […]

Basel Week Miami ’09 – Dabs & Myla @ Primary Flight

Amidst the living legends, old school heroes and contemporary street artists taking part in this year’s Primary Flight, AM was excited to see the whimsical and well worked wall by Dabs & Myla whom you’ll remember we visited last month in Los Angeles.  With an upcoming appearance at Thinkspace Gallery, expect good things from our favorite Aussie couple. More pictures after the jump.

Basel Week Miami ’09: Ron English – Primary Flight Mural

As Jeff Soto (covered) was busy creating his contribution to this year’s Primary Flight, AM favorite Ron English was busy working on a mural of his own. Another rendition of his classic “Guernica” tribute, Ron’s hand painted masterpiece features many of his most identifiable characters.  As an added bonus, Ron put up some new, colorful wheatpastes, something we haven’t seen him do in quite a while. More pictures after the jump.

Basel Week Miami ’09: Jeff Soto – Primary Flight Mural

There are so many artists getting up at Basel Week Miami this year that it’s hard to keep up with everything. On our list today was Jeff Soto’s (interviewed) mural for Primary Flight. The almost completed piece, although different, is reminiscent of a mural he did in London during his show at StolenSpace in May. In fact, Soto tells us that doing some street work in the UK (the first time in 10 years) started him itching for more outdoor displays of his art like […]

Basel Week Miami ’09: Barry McGee – Wynwood Walls Mural

After opening his epic show last month at PRISM, Barry McGee moved on to Art Basel for his next project. For his Wynwood Walls installation, McGee covered an entire building with his signature geometric patterns, left plenty of tags, trademark imagery, and threw in an overturned car as well, smoke machine and all.  AM spent some time salivating over the details on the site all the while documenting everything to share with you! More images after the jump…

Preview: Basel Week Miami ’09 – Wynwood Walls

AM swung by Deitch Project’s Wynwood Walls early yesterday to check out the massive mural installation, still in progress. Upon arriving at the complex, we were greeted by Martha Cooper (interviewed) who was busy taking shots of Futura, Shepard Fairey (featured), Os Gemeos and Kenny Scharf as they were busy installing their massive murals. With additional pieces by Aiko, Barry McGee and Swoon (interviewed), expect Wynwood Walls to present an impressive showing later this evening. More pictures after the jump.

Streets: Blu in Lima – The Finished Wall

Looks like the massive time-intensive mural we told you he was working on has been completed by Italian street artist Blu, this time in Peru. He painstakingly covered this building with skulls and bones, turning it into his personal ossuary and then painted various figures (conquistador, priest, military, business) implied to have profited from the people of Lima. More images after the jump…

Preview: “Grifters” Group Show @ Lazarides (Rathbone Place)

It appears that the preparations for Lazarides’ group show “Grifters” is already in full swing (teased). With most of the works already arriving inside the gallery, the artists got busy around the streets of London. Our friend Ian Cox went on an urban expedition with all the artists from this amazing group show including: David Choe, Vhils, Invader, Mode 2 among others for some in-progress photos of their outdoor work. His pics (see the full set here.) also gives a quick little preview of what is to be a colossal show at […]

World Tour: Japan with Nick Walker

It’s been a while since our last “World Tour” feature from Japan (here), so naturally, we were excited that Nick Walker (interviewed) dropped in on the land of the rising sun to do a little “street work” for his Japanese fans. Following up on his infamous “The Morning After” series (here and here), he visited locations in Tokyo and Osaka to do some “hits” with some long time favorites along with some new creations. In addition, he also participated in a live painting session where he […]

Openings: Gert and Uwe Tobias – The Breeder, Athens

AM was in Athens, Greece, and stopped into The Breeder to check out the latest show by Romanian-born twins Gert and Uwe Tobias. We first became aware of the brothers a few years back after happening upon a show of theirs at a gallery in Los Angeles’ Chinatown, where we were instantly taken by their dark yet playful works on paper. Since then, they have done quite well to say the least, exhibiting at MoMA, as well as at prestigious galleries around the world.
