Nuart Festival ’13: Part I – Dot Dot Dot, David Choe, Martin Whatson

After bringing you a preview of the lineup for this year’s Nuart Festival (see previous years) as well as an advance look at David Choe’s (featured) street stylings (here), we now bring you part one of our ongoing coverage of the event. Artist Herbert Baglione is currently in Frankfurt, Germany for the Street-Art Brazil exhibition put on by the SCHIRN along with other artists like Nunca, Zezao, and more. With the opening festivities scheduled for the 4th, the Brazilian street muralist has been extending his 1000 Shadows project (also see Parma, Italy) into the Deutschland. Over the last couple of weeks, organisers and curators Gage Hamiliton and Matt Wagner (of Hellion Gallery) have assembled 15 international artists to participate in Forest For The Trees. The mural project in Portland, Oregon saw Blaine Fontana (work pictured above), Erik Otto, Kamea Hadar, Gage Hamiliton, J. Streets: Case for Walltherapy (Rochester)

This last week brought new work from German street artist Case for the Wall Therapy event in Rochester, New York. Following up their 2012 rendition with even a stronger roster this year, the city was gifted many new pieces including two murals from the Maclaim crew member. Particularly stunning was the tribute seen above to Martin Luther King near Park & Colby featuring the colorful hand styles that he has been using recently in his walls. Preview: Nuart Festival 2013 (David Choe)

After resurfacing in Mexico for his first show in years, David Choe (featured) has switched continents for his next foray in the streets. Along with Choe, this year’s Nuart Festival in Stavenger, Norway also features Martha Cooper, DALeast, ROA, M-City, Faith47, Hush, Vhils, Ernest Zacharevic, C215, Dot Dot Dot, Dotmaster, Strok, Martin Whatson, and Aiko. Although the event officially opens on September 7th, Choe is already in town retracing his steps from 2011, painting new murals for his fans to enjoy.

The recent extensive showcase of street art put together by the Wooster Collective for their ten year anniversary exhibition (covered) at Jonathan LeVine Gallery was just the tip of the iceburg. In the streets of Williamsburg & Dumbo, the collective got ahold of some prime wall space for some of the artists involved to work on. Last weekend, Cleon Peterson took on a large scale mural in downtown Los Angeles. Coming off a great summer exhibition across the pond at London’s The Outsiders’ Soho gallery, Cleon kept his acerbic and raw edge as he composed a hard hitting piece featuring his signature “Brinksmen.” Created over the span of two days, the wall was painted with a bloody looking color scheme making it a fresh eye-catcher for the people of LA. Over the weekend, Brazilian artist Nunca finally finished a mural he has been working on all week in the heart of Los Angeles for the TARFEST Music and Art Festival. The massive piece (arranged by Merry Karnowsky Gallery & Launch Gallery) features imagery quite appropriate for the location with a series of paparazzi figures painted in the street artist’s distinctive style. Streets: INSA for The Vaford Gates (Hong Kong)

Earlier this month, the UK-based INSA returned to Hong Kong for a set of murals at The Vaford Gates in Chai Wan. If you remember, the street artist know for his heel motifs had a show in the city-state in 2011 at the Above Second Gallery. The project at this former old factory building location plans to feature a rotating cast of local and international artist so we’ll be sure to see more action soon… Discuss INSA here.
