Aside from the major fairs operating during Art Basel Week in Miami, there are countless art shows, launches and parties occurring during this tightly packed period. One unique building housed two notable ABMB events. The Pritzker Architecture Prize winning structure (designed by Herzog & de Neuron) held a great exhibition entitled PISTON HEAD: Artists Engage the Automobile. This show utilized the top floor and held a selection of classic automobiles reinterpreted by a distinguished group of artists including Ron Arad, Bruce High Quality Foundation, César, Dan Colen […]

Showing: Cai Guo-Qiang – “Falling Back to Earth” @ Gallery of Modern Art (Brisbane)

As you probably surmised from our comprehensive coverage of Cai Guo-Qiang’s exhibition in Los Angeles last year, we quite enjoy the Chinese artist’s explosive techniques and inventive installations. That’s why if you will be near Queensland in the coming months, you need to make time to stop by Brisbane’s Gallery of Modern Art. Although there are other works in the show like Head On, a stream of suspended wolves, the highlight of the show is a new installation piece entitled Heritage. Although the message of the piece featuring a […]

The first infinity room we spent some time in entitled Souls of Millions of Light Years Away […]

Installations: David Choong Lee @ Union Square Grand Hyatt

Recently, David Choong Lee completely two massive installations in San Francisco at the Grand Hyatt in Union Square. The stunning piece meal assemblages, one in predominantly white and one in red, are composed in a way often seen from the locally-based artist (see 2012 show). Stop by the lobby and bar of the hotel if you are in the area as fellow members of the Further Collective, Mars-1 & Damon Soule and other artists also have work on display. Photo credit: Sori Kim. Discuss David Choong Lee here.

Earlier this month, the Breeze Block Gallery in Portland played host to a three-man show entitled Three The Hard Way. The three artists, Christopher Derek Bruno (interviewed), Augustine Kofie (featured), and Jerry ‘Joker’ Inscoe are all members of the Transcend Collective and have evolved their individual aesthetics while drawing from their graffiti background. Take a look at more photos of the opening and installation below… Discuss this show here.

Discuss Todd James here.

Showing: Sweet Toof & Rowdy – ‘Drifters’ @ See Studio

Editor’s note: This post was guest written for AM by Alex Ellison. Having seen Alex’s photography captures of the work by these two prolific street artists over the years, and his expert knowledge of the historical context of their work, there seemed like no-one better than Alex to cover this exhibition for us even though we’d made the trip to London to see the exhibition ourselves…  Last weekend saw the opening of Drifters, a joint show of new work by Sweet Toof and Rowdy, following on from […]

Showing: Gaia – “Marshland” @ Rice Gallery

The prolific Baltimore and Brooklyn-based Gaia currently has big installation showing at the Rice University Art Gallery. For this project, the young artist did a series of interviews with people working at the university as well as gathered some information about the history of Houston. Through this research, he created his impression of “Houston’s sprawling urban landscape and increasingly international demographic,” and turned it into reality at the university gallery. By mixing different techniques and mediums, while using multiple layers of different images, he created an ensemble that features meticulously replicated […]
