Showing: Yoskay Yamamoto – “Submerged” @ Times Square (Hong Kong)

At the end of last month, Yoskay Yamamoto (interviewed) unveiled a major installation and show at one of Hong Kong’s busiest thoroughfares – Time Square. Presented by LeBasse Projects, the project featured two large heads, recognizably from the LA-based artist’s imagery, as well as other surrounding Submerged sculptures. After a great first week in New York City where Banksy hit seven different locations over seven days (covered here), he starts off the week on Monday with a philosphical reference piece (Day 8). Openings: David Ellis – “Hudson River Alley” @ Joshua Liner

New York based artist David Ellis currently has a solo show titled Hudson River Alley going at Joshua Liner Gallery through October 19. This exhibition showcases the beautiful body of work consisitng of sculptures and paintings influenced by his new studio surroundings in Woodstock, NY. The area’s natural and historical surroundings plays a role in the artist’s use of tobacco-stained paper and embrace of imagery such as black bears, silhouettes of soldiers, and the American flag. Openings: Gary Baseman – “Mythical Homeland” @ Shulamit Gallery

Over the weekend, the Shulamit Gallery in Venice, California opened their doors to Gary Baseman’s (interviewed) Mythical Homeland. Dominating the showspace was a birch forest installation that had photographs, drawings, and paintings hung throughout which references the experiences the LA-based artist’s father went through as a freedom fighter hiding from the Nazis (also illustrated in a recent music video with Die Antwoord). The 2013 British Ceramics Biennial which opened in Stoke-on-Trent on 28 September, celebrates the best in contemporary ceramics through a six-week programme of exhibitions, installations and events. One of the installations, Take Stock by Lawrence Epps, has been created from 12,000 ceramic office workers, which visitors to the biennial will be invited to take away with them. Fans in the Los Angeles area who missed Gary Baseman (interviewed) and his monumental show (covered) at the Skirball Cultural Center earlier this year now have a chance to redeem themselves. Tonight (October 5th) in Venice, California, Baseman will be opening another solo show at the Shulamit Gallery entitled Mythical Homeland. Hush For TAO Downtown (New York)

Over the weekend, TAO held a monster party to launch their new location at the Maritime Hotel in Chelsea, their second New York location. Over the course of four weeks leading up to the grand opening, the UK-based Hush’s (interviewed) was asked to create multiple large-scale installations for the mega-clubrestaurant, essentially guiding the design of the interiors thematically with is his east meats west urban aesthetic and the geisha girls that have populated his works of late. The Los Angeles-based Mark Dean Veca (interviewed) recently traveled to Michigan to create an installation for this year’s ArtPrize competition. The site-specific immersive installation entitled Year of the Snake transforms the Grand Hall of the old Public Museum of Grand Rapids with his signature imagery. The concept behind the work featuring a printed vinyl floor and hand-painted walls is a riff on this year’s Chinese Zodiac and that fact that the space is actually going through a transformation, like the shedding of a snake’s skin. NY born artist Gaia just finished setting up a new complex installation at the Rice University Art Gallery which will be officially revealed and opened tonight.
