Just this Saturday night, the Mark Moore Gallery in Culver City hosted the newest solo show from Andrew Schoultz entitled Fall Out. As we have come to expect form the San Francisco-based painter, the showspace was transformed with a series of installations. Just short of two weeks ago, José Parlá announced he was working on a mural titled Diary of Brooklyn, commissioned by Brooklyn’s newest arena-style concert venue and home to the Brooklyn Nets, The Barclay’s Center. This gigantic piece is the largest to date from break-out urban landscape artist José Parlá, measuring a whopping 10 x 70 feet. Openings: James Jean – “Parallel Lives” @ Tilton Gallery

Last night, James Jean (interviewed) premiered his latest body of work at New York’s Tilton Gallery. Entitled Parallel Lives, this amazing collection of works demonstrated the full spectrum of talent and techniques that makes James one of the hottest artists over the past decade. Singapore-based Chandran Gallery will officially be opening its San Francisco gallery later in the year, after some needed renovations to its building. We recently stopped by the New Museum to check out their latest artistic installation in the main lobby. Entitled She’s Crafty, this holiday pop up project gives 13 female artists a few days to bring their talents to share with museum goers. Brooklyn certainly seems to be getting their fair share of high-profile art projects recently. After Barry McGee’s large scale mural (covered here & here) in October at the Mark Morris Dance Group, the borough will will now see the work of José Parlá adorn the new home of the Brooklyn Nets – The Barclays Center. This past month, we brought you the preview of Color or Colour at Charles Bank Gallery in NYC. This well composed group exhibition included the works of London based Ben Eine among others. Eine is best known for his large-scale outdoor typography inspired works with a color theory combination that have Pantone designers batting their eyelashes. Traveling relentlessly over the past couple years, Eine settled into New York City, just long enough to bring the house with his other artists in the show, most notably Lee Baker. […]

Videos: Cai Guo-Qiang – “Black Christmas Tree” @ The Smithsonian

Just in time for Christmas, Cai Guo-Qiang has brought his pyrotechnics skills back to America (see Los Angeles earlier this year). Commissioned by the Arthur M. Sackler Gallery at the Smithsonian in Washington DC, the renowned Chinese contemporary artist executed three separate explosions in a performance entitled Black Christmas Tree described as acupuncture treatment for arts in the city.
