Openings: Sixeart – “Sueñan las gallinas con ser humanas” @ ROJO artspace Sao Paulo

Sixeart opened his debut solo show in Sao Paulo at ROJO artspace POP last Tuesday, August 11th. The fantastic exhibit, entitled “Sueñan las gallinas con ser humanas” (in English: “The hens dream about being human”), showcases thirteen brand new works on paper and a colorful installation featuring his trademark characters, geometric shapes and mysterious numerals, all stabbed with wooden arrows. The Barcelona native, who has painted on the streets since the 1980s, enjoys a successful fine art career in Spain. He achieved international recognition in 2008 when he joined fellow artists Blu, Faile, JR, Nunca and Os Gemeos in painting […]

Setup: Shawn Barber – “Tattooed Portraits: Snapshots” @ Shooting Gallery

Yesterday, AM had the pleasure of visiting Shawn Barber as he was putting on the final touches of his solo show “Tattooed Portraits: Snapshots” at San Francisco’s Shooting Gallery (teased). Shawn’s still life paintings and overall representation of tattoo culture look even more impressive in person. The show opens tonight, Saturday the 15th, and we for one can’t wait to check it out in it’s entirety. Process and installation pics after the jump.

Video: Ryan McGinness @ VA Museum of Fine Arts

Richmond’s Virgina Museum of Fine Arts is currently undergoing an expansion, scheduled to be completed by May 1, 2010. As part of that transformation, the VMFA has asked AM favorite Ryan McGinness (who last showed at Deitch) to create a large-scale, site-specific artwork based on the museum’s collection to greet visitors upon entering the museum.  Watch the above video to see a hard-hatted McGinness visit his work’s future home and discuss the ambitious project with VMFA curator John Ravenal.

Preview/Setup: Chris Stain and Armsrock – “I Know There Is Love” @ Ad Hoc Art

Two of the most original voices working in street and gallery settings today, Chris Stain and Armsrock, have what looks to be an outstanding show coming up at Ad Hoc Art this Friday, August 7th. Both artists capture moments of hope and dignity in urban life without romanticizing the challenges and despair. We are very impressed with their new work and the installation they are currently preparing in the gallery. Take a look at all the setup pics as well as a nice video after the jump…

Showing: Steinbrener & Dempf – “Trouble in Paradise” @ Schönbrunn Zoo (Austria)

An interesting exhibition opened in June at the Schönbrunn Zoo in Austria entitled “Trouble in Paradise.” Artist duo Christoph Steinbrener and Rainer Dempf created a series of six artistic interventions dealing with the idea of nature versus civilization, themes we know well from following artists such as Banksy, Josh Keyes, and Shepard Fairey, to name a few. However, to bring the art directly into a controlled “natural” environment like the zoo is pretty genius. Examples include railroad tracks in the bison pen, a sunken car […]

Openings: Jaybo – “Headscape: Tales From the Drifters” @ Signal Gallery

Berlin-based artist, Jaybo (aka Monk), opened his show “Headscape: Tales From the Drifters” in London this weekend at the Signal Gallery (interviewed) in London. This show from the versatile artist focuses on his portrait style of painting as well as several large murals.  The distorted and contorted faces in this body of work certainly convey a raw emotion that leaves a lasting impression in the viewer’s mind.  Particularly striking is his use of color – brilliant reds that contrast and draw our attention to each […]

AM just got back from a lil’ visit to the Patrick Painter galleries in Santa Monica to take in the work of the Clayton Brothers (studio visit). The new shows look amazing. The larger works were being photographed when we popped through, so we offer up a nice lil’ view of the other gallery which showcases the smaller works. The larger works are just breathtaking. Look for more on those and the opening night to be posted here soon. More photos after the jump…

Update: Josh Keyes – “Sprout” @ David B. Smith Gallery

All of us here at AM are big fans of Josh Keyes’ work, and after our recent trip to Denver for the opening of his latest solo show “Sprout” at David B. Smith Gallery, we thought it would be interesting to look at the interactive installations again after they have been in place for a few weeks to see just how the sprouting went… Read on for more pictures after the jump.
