Last Saturday in Paris, a special show from Brendan Monroe (interviewed) and Evah Fan opened at Galerie L.J. The American duo each brought separate bodies of work entitled “Figments” and “Come What May” respectively and both included paintings as well as sculptural works. AM stopped by again at the Park Avenue Armory to check up on the progress of Yoshitomo Nara and YNG/graf during this week’s “Open Studio” session. Teaser: KAWS – “Passing Through” @ Harbour City (Hong Kong)

It looks like Kaws has some “big” things planned for Asia this October. Take a look at this huge sculpture he’s working on for the “Passing Through” exhibition at Harbour City, one of the biggest shopping venues in Hong Kong. The hand positioning is reminiscent of the collaboration he did with Yue Minjun back in 2008. Discuss KAWS here.

Openings: “Love Conquers All” @ Thinkspace Gallery

Last Saturday night, AM stopped by the “Love Conquers All” show in Culver City at the Thinkspace Gallery. The exhibition’s concept was based on the struggle of the gay community for equality with part of the proceeds were donated to Equality California. Things don’t always turn out well for themed group shows, but this time, many of the artists were able to maintain their signature imagery yet at the same time subtly produce relevant works. Video: Anish Kapoor @ Guggenheim (Bilbao)

Renowned sculptor Anish Kapoor is currently showing at the Guggenheim in Bilbao, the first large-scale survey of the artist’s work to be seen in Spain. In a fascinating series of videos, Kapoor gives a tour of each of the major pieces in the exhibition. Video: JR x Patrice – Ain’t Got No (I Got Life)

German/Sierra Leonean reggae singer Patrice recently released a music video featuring an iconic speaker sculpture by JR (examples here and here). Utilzing some stop motion animation, “Ain’t Got No (I Got Life)”, a cover of a song by Nina Simone, features the wheatpasted set of speakers in different configurations throughout the video. Look for more from the French street photographer later this year in London, Shanghai, and Miami but for now, enjoy this video. Discuss JR here.

Nancy Rubins, whose monumental sculptures are prominently on outdoor display at MOCA Los Angeles and MOCA San Diego, now takes over the inside one of Southern California’s finest galleries – Gagosian Gallery in Beverly Hills. The artist has built two spectacular sculptures in the recently unveiled addition to the gallery. Last weekend, the traveling museum exhibition “TRANSFER” opened it’s doors at the new Brazilian Cultural Pavilion. In 2008, the first edition of the event was held at Santander Cultural in Porto Alegre, Brazil’s largest city in its southern region. This year, the show featuring “contemporary visual art, street art, skateboarding, independent music, as well as underground comics and fanzine art from the last two decades” is set in the cradle of Brazilian street art, Sao Paulo, hoping to duplicate or exceed the 80,000 visitors that […]
