Do Ho Suh – “Fallen Star” for UCSD’s Stuart Collection

Tomorrow in San Diego, Do Ho Suh’s Fallen Star finally opens at UCSD’s Jacobs Hall at the Jacobs School of Engineering. The project from the famed Korean sculptor, which is the 18th permanent sculpture commissioned by UCSD’s Stuart Collection, has been seven years in the making and was funded by $1.3 million in private donations. After seeding his home city of Lisbon with multiple murals (here, here, here & here) highlighting his unique skills, Vhils (filmed) has opened his show there at Vera Cortês Art Agency. And, what a show it is! For trendy London eatery Tramshed, the menu primarily focuses on steak and chicken items. Greeting guests and reminding them of this fact is the spectacularly placed Cock and Bull piece from Damien Hirst created specifically for the restaurant. No word on if the formaldehyde tank featuring the uncooked versions of the food has any effect on your appetite, but it is sure to have fans of the British artist salivating for more. For your Memorial Day Weekend perusal, we have this week’s Art Focus on sculptor Willy Verginer. The intricate works from the Italian artist are carved usually from a single piece of wood featuring people interacting with inanimate objects or animals in some interesting positions. If you remember, we previewed the Ron Mueck exhibition at Hauser & Wirth, London (Saville Row, South Gallery) last month. Those familiar with Mueck’s hyperrealist style and playful distortions of scale will know his work needs to be seen in person to be fully appreciated. Currently showing at L&M Arts in Los Angeles through June 16th is a selection of work from renowned American sculptor and artist Alexander Calder, some never seen before by the public.
