Openings: Gardar Eide Einarsson – “Power Under Construction” @ Honor Fraser

This past Saturday saw the opening of Gardar Eide Einarsson’s second exhibition with Honor Fraser.  The politically rebellious artist’s show included minimalist black & white artwork using found objects and appropriated imagery.  The main piece of the show consisted of a installation of rubber car tires and casts of sharpened bamboo sticks.  Meant to recreate and recontextualize the makeshift street barricades found in Thailand, the piece references ’60s installations and happenings, such as Allan Kaprow’s Yard. See more of it and the rest of the […]

Openings: Hajime Sorayama – “1970 – 2010” @ Gering & Lopez Gallery

Gering & Lopez Gallery sure knows how to kickstart the new year by working hard to bring a jaw-dropping exhibition with acclaimed Japanese artist Hajime Sorayama. The show “1970 – 2010” (teased) is a tremendous display of the “four corners” of Sorayama’s illustrious style that he’s created over the past four decades. We experienced his sexy Robots & Gynoids to iconic figures in Pin Up poses to his sultry Myth & Fantasy femme fatales to his risqué erotic & fetish illustrations. The beauty and raw […]

Openings: Jean Labourdette (Turf One) – “The Rising” @ Jonathan Levine Gallery

Opening a several weeks ago alongside SHAG (covered) at Jonathan Levine Gallery was Jean Labourdette (Turf One). The self taught French-Canadian artist created a great show he named “The Rising”. Utilizing numerous found objects on which he painted on, Jean worked to create interactive pieces for the viewers. What we enjoyed in particular were the realistic subjects which which were effortlessly integrated into their respective backdrops. Check out the full show after the jump.

Openings: “Zen Garage” @ JANM

Last week, the Japanese American Nation Museum hosted “Zen Garage”, a small exhibition featuring some custom vehicles from Shinya Kimura, Giant Robot’s Eric Nakamura (interviewed), and David Choe (featured).  The highlight for us was Choe’s custom monster Scion xB showcasing some of his signature artwork on its body and his love for the drums in the back. Openings: Ryan McGinness – “Black Holes” @ Phillips de Pury (NYC)

For a New Year’s Eve treat, AM stopped by the Highline in Chelsea’s meatpacking district to check out Ryan McGinness’ outdoor installation located at Phillips de Pury’s 15th St. auction floor. Even more impressive in person when compared to our preview, the specially designed show was created with two parts in mind – an indoor display (more on that later) of his paintings during business hours and the other being a transformation with signature black-light treatment after sunset for the outdoor passersby via the Highline bridge […]

Odili Donald Odita – “Body and Space” @ Jack Shainman Gallery

AM recently dropped by Jack Shainman Gallery in Chelsea to check out Odili Donald Odita’s latest exhibition Body and Space. The artist of Nigerian descent gave us a lesson in color and geometric layouts while utilizing a diverse and bold color palette. Odili engaged viewers with the question of “what color means to them” and had us going from the moment we set foot in the gallery space. Check it all out after the jump.

Openings: “Never Judge” @ StolenSpace Gallery

Classics like 20,000 Leagues Under the Sea, 1984, War of the Worlds, and Beauty and the Beast had their covers redone by artists like Art Under Pressure, Shepard Fairey, Eelus, and Will Barras. See these and more after the jump with photos courtesy of Street Art London and Unusual Image.

Openings: “Postermat” @ The Hole Gallery

AM recently attended The Hole Gallery’s latest show Postermat. The group exhibition was a little different than the typical group show because they went all retro with it. Imagine going back to your childhood and rummaging through mall shops for your favorite posters of sports, rockbands, singers or even comic books – almost everyone had a cheap but cool poster that was maybe mass produced, but meant the world to us. In the same spirit, the good folks at the Hole and Levi’s, got together […]

Openings: “Law of the Jungle” @ Lehmann Maupin

When AM came back from our adventures during Basel Week down in warm Miami, we were greeted back in New York by freezing temperatures. Fortunately, “the twins” made a trip back with us back to the Big Apple. We caught the opening night at Lehmann Maupin Gallery where a great group show curated by Tiago Carneiro da Cunha was on display. The show’s central theme was “survival of the fittest” and featured Efrain Almeida, Caetano de Almeida, Ashley Bickerton, Joshua Callaghan, Marcos Chaves, Saint Clair Cemin, […]

Openings: Kevin E. Taylor – “Dislocated” @ Eleanor Harwood

Earlier this month at the Eleanor Harwood Gallery in San Francisco, Keven E. Taylor put on a show within a show in a sense as he rendered various animals, birds, and fish on display inside his paintings at what looks to be a museum. Disclocated examines concepts of isolation, exhibition and preservation with the subjects removed from their natural state and frozen in a moment of time and forces the viewer to consider if this is the future of our companions on this earth. More […]
