AM attended a special party at Phillips de Pury for Ryan McGinness’ Black Holes” exhibition last Friday night. After bringing you an indoor and outdoor view of this mind altering installation, it seemed only natural that McGinness Studios hosts an event that incorporates the human element into the already impressive show. Invitees were reminded to dress in white/bright clothing in order to interact with the black-lit backdrop. Openings: George Condo – “Mental States” @ New Museum

On Tuesday night AM attended the private opening of Mental States at the New Museum in New York. The exhibition is the first major US survey of works by George Condo with a over 80 paintings and sculptures spanning 1982 to current day by the adventurous and imaginative artist. Utilizing two floors of the spacious museum, Condo’s work was separated into multiple areas. Last Saturday night, “The Big Picture” opened at Subliminal Projects featuring the work of DEVO frontman Mark Mothersbaugh and Shepard Fairey’s (featured). The show is a joint project between two artists who are deeply involved with philanthropy with both recently named Art of Elysium Visionaries. More photos after the jump courtesy of Brandon Shigeta.

Last night, Toronto-based artist Ray Caesar’s “A Gentle Kind of Cruelty” premiered in New York at the Jonathan LeVine Gallery. This new body of work, which seems to have a more personal meaning this time around, features Caesar’s signature use of 3D modeling and animation programs where he painstakingly builds up his porcelain-skinned female characters and stages them in detailed environments. This past Thursday, José Parlá was the guest of honor at a commencement party that paid tribute to the two ginormous murals he recently endowed to the City of Toronto. Commissioned by the Concord City Place, the Brooklyn-based street art legend turned contemporary art heavyweight proved first hand what it means to “go big or go home”, with a duo of larger than life works executed in his patented graffiti-inspired calligraphic style. With Part 2 of Psych Optic Black Light Fuzz, Dalek (interviewed) concluded his atypical, yet engaging dual exhibition at Hurley )( Space in Costa Mesa, CA, a stones throw away from where Part 1 (covered) was staged, in truly psychedelic fashion. Currently on view at Culver City’s always exciting gallery Cherry and Martin is Nathan Mabry’s Armature. The exhibition features five new sculptures and a sculptural fountain. The aluminum, bronze, and steel works are wonderfully odd, humorous, engaging, and both familiar and unexpected. The artwork references such artists as Picasso and other modernists while at the same time influenced by African and Native American art. It’s a fantastic show and you should see it before it closes on Feb. 12. See more images after the jump…
