Basel Week Miami ’15 / Showing: SCOPE

One of the first satellite fairs we hit during Basel Week Miami was SCOPE Miami, situated nicely in their pavilion on the beach off Ocean Drive. Celebrating its 15th anniversary edition with 120 international exhibitors from 22 countries and 57 cities, the fair had something for everyone including this Suck Face bronze from D*Face seen above and the Felipe Pantone installation seen directly below. Enjoy the rest of the photos below… Photo credit: @sashabogojev for Arrested Motion. Discuss Basel Week Miami here.

Basel Week Miami ’15 / Openings: Tomoo Gokita – “Damage Control” @ Bill Brady Gallery

Fresh out of the gates for Basel Week Miami is a showing from Tomoo Gokita with acrylic and gouache on canvas paintings at Bill Brady Gallery’s new permanent space in the Little River District. The new body of work, titled Damage Control, took portraiture painting to another level with works based on vintage portraits of Hollywood divas, movie stills, found photos and postcards. Created with soft gradients, solid black, or even unpainted white space, the Japanese artist’s characters are mostly faceless, giving only subtle suggestions of their basic features. While mysterious and almost haunting […]

Openings: James Jean – “Zugzwang” @ Hidari Zingaro

Earlier this month, as a part of GEISAI∞infinity project curated by Takashi Murakami, James Jean (interviewed) opened up a solo show at Kaikai Kiki’s Hidari Zingaro in Tokyo. Entitled Zugzwang, the new body of work highlighted some of the American artist’s imaginative imagery in a large scale form that mirrored his moleskin sketches that we have come to love. Along with these figurative gems created in a blue hue and accented with red and pink, Jean also contributed a more painterly triptych that dominated the room. Photo credit: Ksn. Openings: Jeremy Fish – “O Glorious City” @ San Francisco City Hall

It’s always a treat to attend Jeremy Fish (featured) openings. This particular opening was truly special as well. When we arrived at City Hall, an hour before the opening, there was already a long line of the locally-based artist’s devotees. As we walked past the line, we noticed Fish tattoos, t-shirt, hoodies, hats and one guy even had limited edition Fish leather shoes! San Francisco mayor, Ed Lee, declared November 19th as the official Jeremy Fish day. Why didn’t this happen sooner? We cannot think of one other […]

Openings: Zachari Logan & Alessandra Maria & Joe Rudko – “Grotesques” & “Di Minores” & “Broken Image” @ Roq La Rue

Zachari Logan’s work has been seen here and there at Roq La Rue for a few years now, but Grotesques is his first solo show at the Seattle gallery. Using colored pencil and pastels, Logan blends plants and animals to create mutated hybrids of familiar species. While the delicate pencil and mylar pieces are framed, two of the pastel paintings are shown simply pinned to the wall. He explains this absence of protection helps the viewer connect better with the piece. In Di Minores, Alessandra Maria […]

Openings: Brian Viveros – “Matador” @ Thinkspace Gallery

This past Saturday night, the “Dirtyland Troops” were out en masse for Brian Viveros’ sold-out solo exhibition entitled Matador at the Thinkspace Gallery in Culver City. Along with a new selection of works (seen in our earlier studio visit) that show a more elaborate detailing, fresh palette, and fusion of artistic concepts, the Riverside-based artists also revealed a large collaborative sculpt with Pretty In Plastic entitled Bullheaded and released of his first ever art book (The DirtyLand), which was published by the gallery. Openings: Tristan Eaton – “Legacy” @ Subliminal Projects

Over the weekend, Subliminal Projects in Los Angeles held the opening reception for Tristan Eaton’s new show (presented by Library Street Collective). Legacy is the locally-based artist’s first solo exhibition in the area in almost a decade, a fact not lost on the crowds that lined up to check out the new work and to show their support. The new paintings feature Eaton’s characteristic patchwork style with this subject matter quite personal this time around. as they were inspired by audio interviews conducted by him of nearly a dozen people who played a pivotal […]

Openings: Barry McGee – “China Boo” @ Ratio 3

After an interval of seven years, Barry McGee is back at Ratio 3 in San Francisco and this time he brought along 50 of his friends to join him. This particular show had a few surprises and whole lot of what we love about the Bay Area legend such as painted signs, geometric paintings, customized surfboards, painted bottles, sketches, and photography. The main gallery hosted the man known as Twist’s work with the vacant store next door converted to the L. Quan – Check Cashing & Healing Arts Centre for all […]

Openings: Nychos – “Translucent Fear” @ Kolly Gallery

A couple weeks ago, Translucent Fear, a new solo show from Nychos, opened at the Kolly Gallery in Zurich. The title of the exhibition references a new technique the Austrian artist has developed to continue his anatomical renderings by adding a layer of translucent skin to his subjects. Applied to both portraits as well as fierce creatures in combat, the x-ray vision of prolific street artist was in full effect in this new body of work. Discuss Nychos here.
