AM dropped by Corey Helford Gallery’s Multi-Plane Show opening (previewed) to see how the finished pieces turned out. The gallery came up with the show’s “Multi-Plane” theme by borrowing the idea from past animation techniques where scenes were created using multiple cell layers. When we previewed Yoko Tanaka’s show that ends soon at David B. Smith Gallery, it didn’t register how large some of her paintings actually were until we saw some opening pics. It’s always nice to have some perspective – in this case – into the soft, delicate, and refined new body of work from Yoko who attended the show in person. More images after the jump…

Openings: Winter Group Show @ White Walls

In addition to Travis Louie’s (interviewed) opening at Shooting Gallery last weekend (covered), the Winter Group Show debuted alongside in the adjoining White Walls gallery. Featuring some heavy hitters such as Shepard Fairey (featured), the Clayton Brothers (featured), and Anthony Lister (interviewed) the group show also boasts some upcoming and very exciting talent, namely artists like Nas Champas, Mark Warren Jacques (interviewed and pictured above), Aaron Nagel, and Casey Gray. Last week, Amsterdam-based artist Chris Berens made his New York debut with a brilliant solo show at Sloan Fine Art. Chris has been working hard on this show and came through with 39 detailed pieces to show for his efforts. As mentioned in our previews (here & here), Chris utilizes a mixed technique blending his heritage of studying the “old masters” with his unique brushstrokes on photographic paper to create a dream like effect. This year’s Basel Week Miami wouldn’t be complete without a visit to the Aqua Art Miami fair in the Wynwood district. Chock full of visual goodies from galleries we know and love to some newly discovered ones that are now on the AM radar. It was treat to experience some great art at this fair. Travis Louie (interviewed) opened his latest solo show, “Lifetime Companions” at the Shooting Gallery this past weekend. Consisting of nine new acrylic paintings, “Lifetime Companions” explores the relationships and origins of a cavalcade of Louie’s characters seen mostly through the eye of a wedding portraitist. With a narrative that delves deeper than any fans imagination could possibly muster, Travis closes out 2010 with an amazing show and one not to miss. UK artist Sickboy opened up his “Logopop” show yesterday in London at The Rag Factory. Along with new paintings and limited edition releases, the Bristol native also had immersive site-specific installations. Although known for his temple icon imagery, Sickboy also explored other aspects of his work with this show that are decidely his own. More images after the jump.
