Openings: José Parlá – “Diary of Brooklyn” @ Barclays Center

Just short of two weeks ago, José Parlá announced he was working on a mural titled Diary of Brooklyn, commissioned by Brooklyn’s newest arena-style concert venue and home to the Brooklyn Nets, The Barclay’s Center. This gigantic piece is the largest to date from break-out urban landscape artist José Parlá, measuring a whopping 10 x 70 feet. The mural utilizes a selection of materials including oil and acrylics, plaster and enamel on wood.  Without question, 2013 is looking to be the year of Parlá. When asked about the mural by the […]

Openings: James Jean – “Parallel Lives” @ Tilton Gallery

Last night, James Jean (interviewed) premiered his latest body of work at New York’s Tilton Gallery. Entitled Parallel Lives, this amazing collection of works demonstrated the full spectrum of talent and techniques that makes James one of the hottest artists over the past decade. Hours before the opening, hundreds of people were lined to get in to see the show and to grab a copy of the limited edition monograph (here). As previewed in our studio visit and installation shots, this recent series is a variable cornucopia […]

Last Thursday evening, Spoke Art Gallery in San Francisco hosted the opening of the 2nd Annual Supersonic Electric Invitational to a packed house with many of the 32 artists in attendance. The show is curated by Zach Tutor, who founded and runs the Tumblr-based contemporary art blog Supersonic Electronic, by choosing some of his favorite artists who he felt are innovative, dynamic and compelling. Openings: “Crucifixion” @ Corey Helford Gallery

Last month, the Corey Helford Gallery hosted the opening for a timely exhibition that looked at a subject many people focus on at the end of the year –  the crucifixion of Christ. For this showing, artists including Glenn Barr, Ray Caesar, Victor Castillo, Ron English, Natalia Fabia, Korin Faught (above), Sarah Folkman, Nancy Fouts, Eric Joyner, Benjamin Bryce Kelley, Maria Kreyn, Marco Mazzoni, Buff Monster, Annie Owens, Michael Page, Chris Pugliese, Candice Tripp, Mark Dean Veca, Nicola Verlato, Tom Neely, Lola, Tom Bagshaw, and Amy Sol were asked to paint their […]

Julia Chiang – “She’s Crafty” @ New Museum

We recently stopped by the New Museum to check out their latest artistic installation in the main lobby. Entitled She’s Crafty, this holiday pop up project gives 13 female artists a few days to bring their talents to share with museum goers. From Dec 12th to Dec 16th, Julia Chiang took stage and brought a mini temporary studio space where she created a host of works demonstrating a wide spectrum of her talents including her signature drip canvases and sculptures. One of our favorite pieces featured […]

Openings: Chaz Bojorquez – “End of the World” @ Plaza De La Raza / Boathouse Gallery

Last week, the architect of LA “cholo” style graffiti and Art In The Streets alum, Chaz Bojorquez, opened up a show at the Plaza De La Raza / Boathouse Gallery. Entitled appropriately although now with hindsight misnamed End of the World, the exhibition which opened on December 21st featured Chicano artist’s signature script glorifying the strength and beauty of the East Los Angeles graffiti lettering styles. Along with paintings, the body of work on display also included hand painted skate boards and the night also saw […]

Openings: DAL – “POWDER of LIGHT” @ Jonathan LeVine Gallery

After meeting up with DALeast & his wife and fellow street artist Faith47 during Basel Week Miami, we would be remiss to not mention his concurrent and current showing at Jonathan LeVine Gallery. POWDER of LIGHT ends this weekend at the New York showspace, but those that stop by will be rewarded by the Chinese-born, South Africa-based artist’s imagery created in his signature style of swirling vortexes of organic black lines. Check out the photos below… Photo credit: Manual Bello for Arrested Motion. Discuss this show here. Discuss […]

Openings: “20 Pieces of Dreams” @ Giant Robot 2

A while back, before the current Post It 8 show (covered) that has taken over the walls of Giant Robot 2, a special show was put on at the gallery entitled 20 Pieces of Dreams. The group exhibition was curated by Mari Inukai and was meant to be in celebration of her daughter Sena’s 20th birthday, a coming of age event in Japanese culture. Included artists were many of Mari’s friends like Amy Sol, Audrey Kawasaki, Edwin Ushiro, Elizabeth Ito, Fumi Omori, Katsuya Terada, Kent Williams, Sean Chao, Stella Im Hultberg, Tessar […]

Openings: “Color or Colour” @ Charles Bank Gallery

This past month, we brought you the preview of Color or Colour at Charles Bank Gallery in NYC. This well composed group exhibition included the works of London based Ben Eine among others. Eine is best  known for his large-scale outdoor typography inspired works with a color theory combination that have Pantone designers batting their eyelashes. Traveling relentlessly over the past couple years, Eine settled into New York City, just long enough to bring the house with his other artists in the show, most notably Lee Baker. […]

Openings: Sarah Joncas – “Taking Over” @ Last Rites Gallery

Earlier this month, the Last Rites Gallery in New York hosted the opening reception welcoming all new works from Sarah Joncas (interviewed). Entitled Taking Over, the new paintings see her semi-autobiographical portraits embrace a darker side with dangerous creatures, eerie transformations, and morbid scenes added to her imagery, which is not surprising seeing the setting (and their penchant for the dark arts) in which they are being displayed. Check out some photos below as well as video interview… Discuss Sarah Joncas here.
