Openings: David MacDowell – “Project Mayhem” @ Thinkspace Gallery

Returning to the site of his last solo show (covered), Dave MacDowell (interviewed) presented a new body of work over the weekend at the Thinkspace Gallery in Culver City. Entitled Project Mayhem, the exhibition certainly caused some damage that as MacDowell targeted anyone and everyone with his special form of caricatured satire – from religious, to political figures, and pop culture icons. Openings: Haroshi – “Virtual Reality” @ Jonathan LeVine

This past weekend, Japanese artist Haroshi debuted a new body of works at New York’s Jonathan LeVine Gallery. Entitled Virtual Reality, this exhibition is the second in the Big Apple by the sculptor known for utilizing used skate decks as his source material. On display this time were full-scale sculptural creations such as kicks by Airwalk, bullets, a skull, and even an incredible life size skater pulling off a handplant. Just this Saturday night, the Mark Moore Gallery in Culver City hosted the newest solo show from Andrew Schoultz entitled Fall Out. As we have come to expect form the San Francisco-based painter, the showspace was transformed with a series of installations. Taking it a step further, these sculptural elements seem to interact closely with the Mission School stalwart’s imagery – like the cannon seemingly spewing gold onto his recent riffs on the American flag. The I’ll Love You ‘Til The End of the World group show opened at Roq La Rue this past Friday to a large crowd which simultaneously got to see some great art and escaped the freezing temperatures outside. The title of the show is based upon a Nick Cave song of the same name, which finds the protagonist just after a bomb blast rocks a hotel as he speeds away, thanking his girl continually in the chorus. Openings: José Parlá – “Diary of Brooklyn” @ Barclays Center

Just short of two weeks ago, José Parlá announced he was working on a mural titled Diary of Brooklyn, commissioned by Brooklyn’s newest arena-style concert venue and home to the Brooklyn Nets, The Barclay’s Center. This gigantic piece is the largest to date from break-out urban landscape artist José Parlá, measuring a whopping 10 x 70 feet. Last night, James Jean (interviewed) premiered his latest body of work at New York’s Tilton Gallery. Entitled Parallel Lives, this amazing collection of works demonstrated the full spectrum of talent and techniques that makes James one of the hottest artists over the past decade. Last Thursday evening, Spoke Art Gallery in San Francisco hosted the opening of the 2nd Annual Supersonic Electric Invitational to a packed house with many of the 32 artists in attendance. Julia Chiang – “She’s Crafty” @ New Museum

We recently stopped by the New Museum to check out their latest artistic installation in the main lobby. Entitled She’s Crafty, this holiday pop up project gives 13 female artists a few days to bring their talents to share with museum goers. Last week, the architect of LA “cholo” style graffiti and Art In The Streets alum, Chaz Bojorquez, opened up a show at the Plaza De La Raza / Boathouse Gallery.
