Openings: Geoff McFetridge – “My Head Disappears When My Hands Are Thinking” @ Playmountain

Currently in Japan, Geoff McFetridge has renewed his collaboration with Heath Ceramics for a show at Playmountain. My Head Disappears When My Hands Are Thinking not only features the Los Angeles-based artist’s minimalistic paintings, but also his specially designed ceramic items (also seen 2011 in LA). Openings: Victor Castillo – “Under Heavy Measures” @ Merry Karnowsky Gallery

On Saturday night, the Merry Karnowsky Gallery welcomed in Victor Castillo for his new solo show entitled Under Heavy Measures. The new body of work included pieces on paper and canvas, sketches, and some sculptures that look like they came straight out of his paintings including the LA-based artist’s signature red sausage noses (see video). Attendees were treated to vivid and troubled imagery juxtaposing the innocence of children and an illustrative style with dark subject matter fraught with ominous creatures, political overtones, and violence. Openings: Dabs Myla – “All Good Things…” @ Metro Gallery

The Metro Gallery in Melbourne very recently hosted the opening reception for Dabs Myla’s latest solo show – All Good Things… Along with paintings featuring the whimsical cartoonish characters which are often seen in their outdoor work, the duo also transformed the space with wall murals and installations (a regular occurrence for those familiar with their exhibitions). Take a look at our photos below or visit in person as the show runs through […]

Openings: Tim Biskup – “Excavation” @ Antonio Colombo

During the fall, Tim Biskup had a big solo at Antonio Colombo Arte Contemporanea Gallery in Milan. The show featured all kinds of different types of artworks – from limited edition porcelain figures, to big graphite drawings on the walls, to drawings and paintings of different sizes, using all kinds of different techniques and styles. The inspirations for this new body of work came when the LA-based artist saw the works of Willem de Kooning at NY MOMA in November of 2011. He was amazed […]

Openings: Diem Chau & Kappao @ Galleria Patricia Armocida

Back in November, we stopped by Galleria Patricia Armocida in Milan, to check out shows by two fresh, talented artists – Vietnam native Diem Chau, and Kappao from Korea. The mutual thing about both artists is the fact that they use very delicate and fragile materials, that through their meticulous patient process,  are turned into delicate beautiful pieces of art. Kappao’s signature material is ceramics, but also, clay, wood, plaster, ropes, fabric, and other “poor materials” that she adds to her sculptures that both have […]

Openings: David Shrigley – “Signs” @ Anton Kern Gallery

Enchanted as we were by David Shrigley’s retrospective last year in London (covered here & here), we were excited to see something new from him for his solo at that opened last week at the Anton Kern Gallery in New York. Entitled Signs, the paintings and sculptural works featured the UK-artist’s well-known witticisms and playful nature. The exhibition runs through February 19th so head over if you are in town. Discuss David Shrigley here.

Openings: Aakash Nihalani – “Portal” @ Jonathan LeVine Gallery

Over the weekend, the Jonathan LeVine Gallery hosted all new work from Aakash Nihalani alongside the solo from Haroshi (covered). Nihalani’s innovative geometric forms, collectively entitled Portal, featured a playful nature throughout the compositions, yet at the same time exhibited a strong sense of structure. In the NY-based artist’s words – “I try to create a new visual space within the physical confines of any piece I work on, through the illusion of three-dimensional imagery contained on a two-dimensional plane. When looking at the work—orientation shifts, shapes merge, direction inverts, foreground […]

Openings: Nate Frizzell – “Spectrum” @ LeBasse Projects (Culver City)

Just this Saturday night, the LeBasse Projects in Culver City hosted the opening for Nate Frizzell (interviewed) and his newest solo show entitled Spectrum. The new paintings each featured the use of one pre-dominant color and his interpretations on the best imagery to fit that color, and when taken in total combine into one cohesive body of work. The show runs until February 2nd so stop by if you can.  Also, check out our photos below… Photo credit: theonepointeight for Arrested Motion. Discuss this show here. Discuss Nate Frizzell here.

Openings: Robert Lazzarini – “(damage)” @ Marlborough Gallery (Chelsea)

Do not adjust your browser – nothing is wrong with the settings. It’s visual distortion at its finest and this is what Robert Lazzarini intends. Last week, AM attended the opening of (damage) at Marlborough Gallery’s Chelsea location in New York to check out a series of works that takes Lazzarini’s mind-bending technique and incorporates the concept of “damage.” From a vault and its unhinged door to a broken window, Lazzarini demonstrates a warped perspective, but also its integrity and utility (or lack thereof). Our favorite is a […]
