Basel Week Miami ’12 / Openings: “Time Evaporates, Emotion Elevates” @ Wynwood Walls

Earlier this evening, AM stopped by Wynwood Walls to check out the opening of the Time Evaporates, Emotion Elevates group exhibition inside the new Nicewalk Gallery space. The show featured backlit lenticular paintings (or photos) alongside some original works from selected artists (Aiko, Ron English, Swoon, How & Nosm, Logan Hicks, Kenny Scharf, Futura) who have painted murals at the complex. The title comes from a quote from Tony Goldman (founder of Wynwood Walls), who recently passed, with whom many of the artists included had an especially […]

Openings: “Tonight We Won’t Be Bored” – 10 Years Of V1 Gallery

With all the great art that is scattered all over the world, it’s not often that you can see works from prominent artists in your home town – and even less likely you see them side by side. That is exactly the scenario we have in Copenhagen at the V1 Gallery as they celebrate their 10 year anniversary with a massive group show entitled Tonight We Won’t Be Bored. Take for example the wall above that has pieces from Todd James, Futura, DearRainDrop, and Kenny Scharf that […]

Openings: Takashi Murakami – “Flowers & Skulls” @ Gagosian (Hong Kong)

Last week, the Gagosian in Hong Kong presented a selection of works from Takashi Murakami entitled Flowers & Skulls, common reoccurring themes in the Japanese superstar’s imagery. The spacious showspace was a perfect backdrop for various paintings from his repertoire including his flower balls, stacked skulls, self-portraits and more.  Stop by before it closes on February 9th if you want to see the work up close and personal. Showing: Vhils – “Devoid” @ Lazarides (Rathbone Place)

Vhils has certainly come along way since his days with a chipping hammer next to a Banksy in the Cans Festival of 2008. This is a perfect example of an artist being catapulted onto the main stage for all the right reasons. In recent years, he has had solo shows around the globe including – China, Paris, Brazil, and most recently back in his home away from home at Lazarides in London. There is one thing we can always count on from this young artist, […]

Openings: Cyrcle. – “Organized Chaos!” (Los Angeles)

Last night, AM stopped by the private opening of Cyrcle.’s new solo show titled Organized Chaos! Taking place in Los Angeles, this new exhibition by the two-man collective focuses on the central idea of the cube and the way in which bees and flowers relate to society as a whole. It’s interesting to point out that unlike most exhibitions in which art is supposed to hang on a wall, this show actually invites the viewer to interact with the artwork itself. Various pieces are made up of […]

Openings: ROA – “Carrion” @ Backwoods Gallery

The Beligum-based ROA, who was recently featured on MOCAtv, has a new exhibition in Melbourne at the Backwoods Gallery entitled Carrion. Fans down under may remember his last showing in Oz in 2010 (covered), but this time the street artist took it up a notch with his installations. Along with his anatomical dissections of native species with his brushstrokes, the art was surrounded by tanks filled with decaying creatures and skeletal remains. Check out all the photos below… Photo credit: Chasing Ghosts. Discuss this show here. […]

Openings: Aya Takano – “Heaven Is Inside Of You” @ Galerie Perrotin (Hong Kong)

Last week, Heaven Is Inside Of You opened up at the Hong Kong branch of Galerie Perrotin featuring all new works from Japanese sensation Aya Takano. The new series of paintings and drawings feature colorful dreamscapes surrounding her androgynous characters, some of which show them exploring different countries. The current output on display from the Kaikai Kiki disciple was influenced by her experiences after the catastrophic earthquake and resulting disasters in Japan.  She states: “Until I experienced the earthquake, I was living a life that was fairly pleasant. […]

Openings: Eriberto & Estevan Oriol – “Like Father, Like Son : NYC” @ Carmichael Gallery

Carmichael Gallery recently presented a popup exhibition for Eriberto and Estevan Oriol in the Big Apple. Entitled Like Father, Like Son : NYC, this exhibition is actually the second installment (first one was in LA) of a traveling retrospective from the renowned Chicano father and son photographic duo. The series of photographs on display show off their gritty and raw viewpoint of lifestyles from the streets of Los Angeles. It was quite an experience to see both of these distinguished photographers showing their works side by side on the East Coast. […]
