POW! WOW! Hawaii ’16 / Previews: “Exploring The New Contemporary Movement” @ Honolulu Museum of Art School

Tomorrow (February 7th) will mark the third time Thinkspace has curated a show in association with POW! WOW! Hawaii at the Honolulu Museum of Art School (see 2015 & 2014). Upcoming: Thomas Doyle – “If The Creek Don’t Rise” @ Hudson River Museum

Today at the Hudson River Museum, sculptor Thomas Doyle is opening a new show entitled If The Creek Don’t Rise. The first museum solo for the Westchester County-based artist will feature more of his signature miniatures that center on the suburban home and the families that occupy them, often threatened by chaos and calamity – known and unknown. Openings: KAWS @ Yorkshire Sculpture Park

Openings: Linnea Strid – “Love Me When I’m Gone” @ Thinkspace Gallery

Last month, the Thinkspace Gallery in Culver City kicked off the new art year with Linnea Strid as one of the featured artists. Love Me When I’m Gone filled the project room space with the Swedish artist’s hyperrealistic paintings, portraiture accented by the subjects interaction with water whether that be submerged or enjoying a shower. Openings: Hajime Sorayama @ NANZUKA Gallery

Last weekend in Tokyo, renowned creator of the “sexy robot” Hajime Sorayama opened a solo show at NANZUKA Gallery. Upcoming: Rime – “Conclusions” @ Jonathan LeVine Gallery

On February 20th, Rime (otherwise know as Jersey Joe) will be opening his debut show with Jonathan LeVine Gallery at their 529 West 20th Street location in New York. Conclusions will feature a future turn towards figurative abstraction from the MSK-affiliated graffiti artist making use of bold colors and energetic compositions. Previews: Jonathan Viner – “Strange Math” @ Roq La Rue

Tomorrow night (February 4th), a new solo show will open at Roq La Rue from Jonathan Viner. Strange Math features eight new paintings from the Brooklyn-based artist that continues his nostalgic look back at his youth with his subjects dressed the part while utilizing an era-appropriate palette. His oil on canvas pieces which focus on the the stylish men and glamourous women of the time almost seem like snapshots from period movies with its cinematic compositions. Showing: Lek & Sowat & Yves Marchand & Romain Meffre – “Teamwork Makes the Dream Work” @ Polka Galerie

Right after starting their residency at Villa Medici in Rome, Lek & Sowat teamed up with photographers Yves Marchand & Romain Meffre for a fresh new project that is currently showing at Polka Galerie in Paris. Teamwork Makes the Dream Work is a joint show that includes a unique series of works produced in collaboration between the two artistic duos. Releases: Mark Ryden – “Surrealist Plate”

Those who followed our coverage of Baby Tattooville last year probably remember one of the prized possessions attendees received during the event – a plate designed by Mark Ryden (interviewed). Featuring his iconic imagery, the “Surrealist Plate” was used during the special dinner prepared for the Surrealistic Ball (covered) he hosted with Marion Peck on the final night.
