Openings: Shag – “Jungle Drums” @ Corey Helford Gallery

Last week in Los Angeles, Shag (interviewed) brought a little retro chic to the new Corey Helford Gallery location with his latest solo entitled Jungle Drums. Along with his signature paintings featuring a nostalgic look back when mod characters hung out sipping martinis, the downtown LA showspace also featured tiki sculptures, a mid-century decor, as well as a large wall covered with his imagery. Upcoming: Amy Sol – “Garden Gamine” @ Thinkspace Gallery

The last solo we had the opportunity of attending from Amy Sol (interviewed) in Los Angeles was back in 2013 (covered), so it was nice to hear she will be presenting some new works at Thinkspace Gallery soon. Entitled Garden Gamine, the set of fresh paintings will continue the Nevada-based artist’s series of delicate portraitures featuring her feminine subjects and their animal friends. An example of this can be seen above, but plan to be there for the opening on April 2nd to seen the rest. Discuss Amy Sol here.

Upcoming: Erik Jones @ Jonathan LeVine Gallery

After a showing at the end of last year in Italy (covered), Erik Jones has already started to work on a new series of paintings. The new batch of originals are destined for an exhibition closer to home for the Brooklyn-based artist at the Jonathan LeVine Gallery in April, his first with the Chelsea showspace. As you can see, he will be presenting more of his vibrant portraiture, infused with abstract forms that could be said to represent geometric high-end fashion. Discuss Erik Jones here.

Previews: KAWS @ Yorkshire Sculpture Park

Three weeks before the official opening on the 6th of February, the historically designed landscape of Yorkshire Sculpture Park turned into sort of a construction site last weekend. With large trucks, cranes and other heavy machinery in place, the setup of the first UK museum exhibition by KAWS has begun. Different body parts, Mickey-like gloves and shoes with signature X’s on them were carefully assembled by the team that was installing the showing from the NY-based artist. A series of wooden Companion sculptures, such as the 10 meter high Small Lie (2013), […]

Openings: Tauba Auerbach – “Projective Instrument” @ Paula Cooper Gallery

On January 9th, Tauba Auerbach returned to Paula Cooper Gallery in New York for a brand new exhibition. Entitled Projective Instrument, the show plays off the 1915 treatise Projective Ornament by the American architect & theosopher Claude Bragdon in which the author outlines a system for drawing four-dimensional ornament on a two-dimensional plane. Building upon this century old thesis, Auerbach further empowers projective geometry and recasts the “Ornament” as “Instrument,” thereby rendering it an active tool rather than mere representation. This results in a diverse series of works that includes paintings, sculptures and music […]
