Showing: John Knuth – “Nothing Without Providence” @ David B. Smith Gallery

You may remember awhile back, we shared a video from artist John Knuth and his unique form of markmaking. By feeding houseflies pigments and then allowing them to run through part of their life cycles on canvas on site at the David B. Smith Gallery in Denver, the Los Angeles-based artist was able to create some abstract paintings through his little assistants’ labor. Nothing Without Providence, a reference to the Colorado state motto, runs through July 10th.

Openings: Masakatsu Sashie – “Blind Box” @ KP Projects // MKG

Just this last Saturday night, Masakatsu Sashie was at KP Projects / MKG presenting some new works in the project room, complementing Jeff Soto’s exhibition in the main space. Entitled Blind Box, the series of oil paintings and drawings centered on the Japanese artist’s striking spheres of manmade objects. The suspended orbs are beautifully rendered and are overlaid over urban environments speaking to ideas of globalism and universality. Take a look at more photos of the opening below… Discuss Masakatsu Sashie here.

Previews: Jonathan Yeo – “Exposure” @ Circle Culture Gallery

Opening on the 10th of July, Exposure will be Jonathan Yeo’s second show with Circle Culture Gallery and the first time he is showing works in Hamburg. The exhibition will primarily consist of his infamous Leaf Works, created using the artist’s distinctive form of pornographic collage. Yeo started the this series in 2008, displaying them in New York and Los Angeles, but this show will be the first, and possibly the last time these pieces are shown together as a coherent body of work. The idea behind these works […]

Just closing over the weekend at the SFAQ [Project] Space, the gallery space of the magazine, was a show entitled Highlights From Past SFAQ [Projects] 2012–2015. The title of the exhibition speaks for itself – artists who have collaborated with the publication before on pullouts or inserts have these projects on display along with an artwork that corresponds to it. These eleven artists are Alexandre Arrechea Arrechea, Chris Burden, Amy Franceschini, Paul Kos, Tom Marioni, Sean McFarland, Mark Mulroney, Barry McGee (seen above), Guy Overfelt, Rafael Rozendaal […]

Streets: Urban Nation / Project M/8 – “FREEDOM” (Part I)

As Urban Nation continues their strong public arts program with their 8th phase (Project M/8) entitled FREEDOM, our attention is drawn back to Berlin to see what a new set of artists have to offer. Curated by StolenSpace, this chapter featured four columns on the facade of a building painted by Shepard Fairey, D*Face, Cyrcle., and Word To Mother with Maya Hayuk painting another section (more on her later). Take a look at some photos of the completed walls and in-progress shots below… Photo credit: Birdman […]

Openings: Jeff Soto – “Nightgardens” @ KP Projects / MKG

Over the weekend, fans of Jeff Soto (interviewed) enjoyed his first showing in Los Angeles in almost a decade. Entitled Nightgardens, the exhibition of KP Projects / MKG featured a series of new acrylic on panel and watercolor paintings incorporating some of the Riverside-based artist’s familiar characters in the midst of some adventure as well as some more abstract still-life like compositions. Featuring a lush color palette, oftentimes referencing the title of the show with its after dark scenes, the fresh collection of works also included crowd pleasers like the […]

Openings: “Vitality and Verve” @ Long Beach Museum of Art

Leading up to the opening of the Vitality and Verve: Transforming the Urban Landscape exhibition last night at the Long Beach Museum of Art (LBMA), we had the opportunity for a preview look at some the murals being created (shared with you here & here). From what we saw, we were really excited to see the culmination of something historic and what we have never seen to this scale before with you – a museum exhibition featuring epic indoor murals from a strong roster of what is a mix of […]

Previews: Mike Lee – “Still Life” @ Giant Robot 2

Tonight (June 27) at Giant Robot 2 in Los Angeles, Still Life will open featuring the work of Mike Lee and Vincent Nguyen. The drawings of Lee are what caught our eyes – compartmentalized slices of urban life that let the viewer take a bird’s eye view of the scene, while letting us peek inside of things that we would never have seen from that perspective. Also, the NY-based artist makes good use of negative space to focus our attention on each particular subject, which […]
