Preview: “Banksy: the Unauthorised Retrospective” @ Sotheby’s (London)

Sotheby’s teamed up with Banksy’s, former agent Steve Lazarides from Lazarides gallery, in order to set up an unauthorized retrospective exhibition of works by the internationally renowned artist. Previews: Thomas Campbell – “Ampersand” @ Joshua Liner Gallery

Next Thursday (June 12th), Joshua Liner Gallery in New York will be opening a show from Thomas Campbell, his first with the gallery. Featuring painting, sculpture, original bronzes, and hand sewn works, Ampersand will let the California-based artist further explore the use of the gourd and its symbolism throughout his visual language. Openings: Scott Hove – “Master of Rapacity” @ Hashimoto Contemporary

Last weekend, Hashimoto Contemporary in San Francisco opened a new show from Scott Hove entitled Master of Rapacity. Featuring his signature faux cake sculptural works, the exhibition was thematically based on what one would see in the house of a corporate bigwig’s house. Hove states: “America is currently undergoing a very decisive and quiet transition to corporate oligarchy, the government becoming more and more acquiescent to corporate policy. Corporate policy is by nature rapacious, and could not give a fuck about nature or your feelings. […]

Showing: Aurel Schmidt & Pierre Molinier @ M+B Gallery

Last week, AM stopped by M+B Gallery in Beverly Hills to check out the current show featuring work from Aurel Schmidt and the late Pierre Molinier. The unexpected pairing actually worked out quite nicely thematically combining Schmidt’s exquisite, twisted, and creative drawings of human anatomy with the French artist’s erotic photomontages. Previews: Kazuki Takamatsu – “Spiral of Emotions” @ CHG Circa

On the 21st of June, CHG Circa in Culver City will be hosting the opening of a new show (see 2013) from Kazuki Takamatsu entitled Spiral of Emotions. Using a combination of digital and more traditional mediums, the ghostly portraits are created with depth map techniques and a layering process. The x-ray like paintings features adolescents and children, textured in graduated spirals, oftentimes juxtaposed against symbols death and violence – his portrayal of the youth or “lost generation” in Japan. Showing: Brendan Monroe & Evah Fan – “Black and Night” @ Shimokitazawa Books

While in Taiwan for POW! WOW! Taiwan, husband and wife Brendan Monroe and Evah Fan took the opportunity to show together at Shimokitazawa Books. Entitled Black and Night, the exhibition featured a small selection of Monroe’s topographic “Black” ink drawings and Fan’s characters floating among the stars of the “Night” sky.
