Previews: Mars-1 – “Toward A Distant Dawn” @ Martha Otero Gallery

This Saturday night (June 7th), the Martha Otero Gallery in Los Angeles will be hosting a solo show from Mars-1 (featured) entitled Toward A Distant Dawn. On display will be a new body of work featuring the Bay Area-based artist’s paintings of otherworldly imagery informed by cosmology, mathematics, altered states of consciousness, science,  among other things. Basel Week HK ’14: Ryan McGinley @ Galerie Perrotin (Hong Kong)

While in town Basel Week Hong Kong, we made sure to stop by the local branch of Galerie Perrotin to take in the work of Ryan McGinley. Vertical Color of Sound is a nice introduction of the New York-based artist to fans in Asia as it features a election of his different series of work. Included are large-scale photographs of his signature summer road trip with friends, his use of fireworks, and his look at night skies. Discuss Ryan McGinley here.

Releases: Jeremy Geddes – “Ascent” Print

Jeremy Geddes (interviewed) recently announced the lottery for his newest print release set to drop next week. Entitled Ascent, the latest limited edition from the Australian artist will feature an image sized at 56cm wide and 56cm high (paper size 61cm x 64m). Highlighting one of Geddes’ most popular reoccurring characters, the gravity defying astronaut can be yours for $235 AUD if you are lucky and will come in a run of 250. Showing: Jessica Harrison – “Flash” @ Galerie LJ

Earlier this month, Jessica Harrison presented her first solo show in Paris at Galerie L.J. entitled Flash, a reference to tattoos which ties her new body of work together thematically. On display were a series that the Scottish artist is perhaps best known for, her play on classic porcelain figurines. For the second year running, the association Faute O Graff is curating Mister Freeze, an exhibition featuring small gallery artworks to large scale installations until June 1st. Previews: Jacub Gagnon – “World’s Collide” @ Thinkspace

Openings: D*Face – “Honestly Dishonest” @ Above Second

During Basel HK week, another major show we hit was from British artist D*Face (interviewed) at Hong Kong’s Above Second Gallery. Presented by Coates & Scarry, the solo entitled Honestly Dishonest featured 18 fresh works focusing on society’s increasing appetite for information. D put together layers of the commercial output which bombard our minds on a daily basis, creating something new and different in and of itself. Releases: Borondo – “Identity” Print

After scratching, spraying and painting his recognizable mark on walls, windows, bus stops, and under bridges around London and other parts of Europe, Borondo just finished working on his next print. In collaboration with StreetArtNews.net, he is releasing this limited, hand painted/drawn screen print.
