From 5 – 13 April 2014, Perth in Australia hosted Public, “a celebration of urban art and creativity” whose goal is to “bring to Perth and the Pilbara urban, visual, and digital artists from around the world.” During this event, around 45 artists from Australia and around the world, created around 30 large-scale urban artworks, transforming walls and laneways with street art, projections, installations, and public events. Fleisher/Ollman Gallery in Philadelphia recently opened a group show titled Department of Neighborhood Services on the 11th of April. Showing new works by Isaac Lin, Dan Murphy and Barry McGee, the exhibition is yet another collaboration of artists who worked together on different projects for over a decade. Aside from publishing and creating DFW zines, with their artworks, photographs, etc, these three artist have already showed their work together previously. After taking part in This is Not a Toy show (covered) curated by Pharrell Williams, the Argentine collective Doma recently opened an exhibition at Logo Galeria in Sao Paulo. Titled Multiverse, this is their first solo in Brazil, and a big step forward towards introducing their work to a wider crowd. Tonight in Los Angeles, Shepard Fairey (featured) will be opening a new show entitled 50 Shades Of Black at Subliminal Projects. The exhibition is centered around the third installment (also see 2011 & 2012) of new album cover artwork, a series of works that Shep is know for, inspired by the 12-inch record cover format. Along with original hand painted multiples, there will also be a box set of screen prints available each containing the 50 new designs. Opening very soon (April 16th) at the ICA’s Lower Gallery in London is Tauba Auerbach’s first solo exhibition in the UK entitled The New Ambidextrous Universe. Consisting of seven all new pieces, the selection of work on display highlights the New York-based artist’s versatility in materials and mediums as well as her mathematical and structured approach to art making. One of the coolest exhibitions that opened up during Armory Week was put on by Anonymous Gallery, who hosted a pop-up exhibition by the red hot Pryce Lee. Entitled Single Shot, this series of fifteen individually composed art pieces explores the instance where a life is changed by a single bullet. Through the use of a mirrored sculpture, Pryce literally reflects the viewer and transport them to a world where violence has the side effect of creating innocent bystanders all around the world. Recap: Joe Sorren – “Knock Three Times” @ AFA Gallery

For those who missed the Joe Sorren (featured) exhibition which just closed at AFA in New York, here are some photos you can peruse from when we stopped by last month. Returning to the gallery that showed him in NYC a year ago (covered), the gifted painter presented twelve new oil paintings collectively entitled Knock Three Times. Seeing Sorren’s expressive paintings in person certainly reminds one of how emotive the gestures of his characters are and how his delicate brushstrokes can create such fantastic dream-like imagery. We recently had the pleasure of visiting the painting studios of Brooklyn based artist Michael Kagan as he was preparing for his show at Joshua Liner Gallery. As it turns out, the final product was even more pleasing than we would have hoped. Entitled Thunder in the Distance, this exhibition focused on space travel and its various key components which make this seemingly impossible task of existing (temporarily) in space possible. Mark Dean Veca – “Le Poppy Den” @ David B. Smith Gallery

Last month, the David B. Smith Gallery gave Mark Dean Veca (interviewed) the go ahead to create a site specific installation in one of the rooms of their Denver showspace. Much like his showing last year at the Orange County Musuem of Art (covered), the LA-based artist created a space, dubbed Le Poppy Den this time, where attendees could be fully immersed in his signature “Toile de Jouy” like patterns. Ai Weiwei’s largest show to date, Evidence, has just opened at Martin Gropius-Bau, Berlin. The exhibition features new works that have been specifically designed for the exhibition or have never been shown in Germany. The show references some of the artist’s most well-known work, and his widely known experiences as an activist.
