French photographer and street artist JR (interviewed) currently has a show at Museum Frieder Burda in Baden-Baden, Germany. The retrospective features shots of his public works as well as the black and-white photographs used for the street installations from a wide range of projects ranging from FACE 2 FACE to THE WRINKLES OF THE CITY to WOMEN ARE HEROES. Last week, during Armory Week, Brooklyn-based artist Logan Hicks held a fresh exhibition at PMM Art Projects‘ pop-up location on NYC’s Lower East Side. We last caught up with Mel Kadel back in 2012 when she presented a solo show at the Merry Karnowsky Gallery in Los Angeles. During January, our friends at Very Near Almost (VNA) invited us to come along on a visit to Swoon (interviewed) Brooklyn studio while they conducted an intimate photo shoot for their 25th issue. Elusive British artist Banksy is back in the spotlight again with another worthy cause. After recently donating the original Heart Balloon for charity, and raising $650,000 for Haiti (covered), Bristol’s most popular man of mystery is at it again by contributing to #WithSyria project. For this project the artist revised one of his most famous and evolved images – Balloon Girl aka Girl With Red Balloon. Armory Week ’14: Volta

One of the satellite fairs we visited first during New York’s Armory Week is Volta. This unique event does not showcase a sampling of a diverse roster of artists like most booths, but instead the invited gallerists select one artist to focus on. Ian Strage aka Kid Zoom recently introduced his latest installation, Landed, for the 2014 Adelaide Biennial of Australian Art. With its focus on architecture, this large, site-specific sculptural work follows his solo exhibitions last year at the National Gallery of Victoria (covered), and at the Canterbury Museum in Christchurch (covered). Over the weekend, AM stopped by Blum & Poe in Culver City to check out the new expansive exhibition from Yoshitomo Nara. The solo is the Japanese artist’s seventh with the gallery and includes a selection of new paintings, a series of large-scale bronze sculptures, and a survey in the upstairs space of drawings made over the last thirty years displayed in a chronological order. Showing: Cleon Peterson – “End of Days” @ New Image Art

Returning to the site of his 2010 Los Angeles solo (covered), Cleon Peterson brought his hard-hitting imagery for his currently showing exhibition at New Image Art entitled End of Days. The collection of paintings feature a limited palette of black & white or black & red, making the brutal details all the more evident when rendered in a uniform color scheme.
