A couple weekends ago, the New York branch of Perrotin Gallery opened a joint exhibition from Emily Mae Smith & Genesis Belanger. A Strange Relative features an intriguing pairing of paintings by Smith and sculptures by Belanger, an amazingly cohesive showing that can be taken as a conversation between the two Brooklyn-based artists. As we mentioned a couple days ago, the Mickey: The True Original Exhibition has opened in New York, celebrating the 90th birthday of one of the most iconic cartoon characters in history. The show is filled with photo-ops, including an amazing piece (seen above) from Daniel Arsham inspired by Thru the Mirror, a Mickey Mouse cartoon short film from 1936 and a Mickey Mouse-themed Cosmic Cavern from Kenny Scharf. Tomorrow (November 10) between 11am-1pm, James Jean (interviewed) will be signing and releasing the Mickey & Minnie Mouse limited edition sculpture set at BAIT Los Angeles to celebrate the 90th birthday of the two Disney cartoons. Created with Good Smile Company, the project transforms the two iconic characters into porcelain succulents frozen in time, shedding and regrowing petals after decades of constant evolution. First Look: KAWS – “GONE” @ Skarstedt Gallery

With the public opening of the heavily anticipated exhibition from KAWS set for tomorrow in NYC, here is a first look at what will be on display at Skarstedt Gallery. GONE features new abstracted paintings that at this point only subtly references the XX and iconic cartoonish characters that used to figure so prominently in the Brookyn-based artist’s work.
