With the public opening of the heavily anticipated exhibition from KAWS set for tomorrow in NYC, here is a first look at what will be on display at Skarstedt Gallery. GONE features new abstracted paintings that at this point only subtly references the XX and iconic cartoonish characters that used to figure so prominently in the Brookyn-based artist’s work. These vibrantly colored compositions are paired nicely with four new large-scale bronze sculptures ranging from the familiar repositioned (like his head down Chum or smaller Companion sitting on a pedestal) to pieces that combine some of his signature characters like the highlight of the show – a Companion and BFF posed in a way that harkens back to Michelangelo’s Pietà, although he has stated that that wasn’t his initial intention.
