Frieze Week NYC ’12: NADA Fair

One of the art fairs that has hitched its wagon to Frieze is that of the New Art Dealers Alliance (NADA). This year’s NADA fair moved to a new spacious location on Manhattan’s Lower East Side and presented a nice range of emerging and mid-career artists. Booths that caught our eye included LA’s M+B, showing Jessica Eaton (seen above) and Toronto’s Cooper Cole showing Georgia Dickie and Lauren Luloff. In addition, the Brooklyn Academy of Music unveiled a new limited edition portfolio featuring prints by such […]

Openings: Alex Lukas @ Guerrero Gallery

Over the weekend, fans of Alex Lukas in the Bay Area saw the return of the Philadelphia-based artist to Guerrero Gallery with a new solo show. Along with what was seen during our studio visit with Lukas featuring his signature dsytopian imagery and submerged cities, the fresh pieces also included some interesting new developments. Among these were series of folded diazotype editions that gave a real dimensionality to his work as well as some pieces with a more abstract look or a “breakdown”  of elements […]

Openings: Nychos – “Pellis Os Omentum” @ Galo Art Gallery

Currently on display through the weekend at the Galo Art Gallery in Torino, Italy is a solo show from Austrian painter Nychos. Pellis Os Omentum includes a series of paintings and drawings that closely references the anatomical focus and cartoonish quality of his street work. In addition, showgoers were able to enjoy the floor to ceiling mural that he painted in the two-level showspace. Check out more photos from the opening reception below… Photos via the gallery. Openings: “Wider than a postcard” & olive47 – “bonita bonita” @ Breeze Block Gallery

Breeze Block Gallery opened their huge group show Wider than a postcard (previewed) alongside the first solo show in their new gallery 2 space – olive47’s bonita bonita (featured) a couple of weeks back to a packed Portland crowd. Over 400 individual works went into the postcard show with 200 artists providing postcard sized works. The work was hung on the walls in grids of 24 cards, each echoing the aspect ratio of the individual works themselves as each work was 6×4 inches. The variance of work encompassed photography […]

Upcoming: Anish Kapoor @ Martin-Gropius-Bau

Coming up this weekend on May 18th, the Martin-Gropius-Bau in Berlin will be opening a new show from Anish Kapoor, one the most influential sculptors of his generation. The exhibition, his first major one in the city, will feature about 70 works spanning his diverse range of mediums including stone, steel, glass, wax, PVC skins, and high-tech material. Of particular interest will be the pieces that have been specifically designed for the venue. Those in the area should add this to their calendar of events and if […]

Preview: Stephen Powers – “Visual Blues” @ Alice Gallery

Brooklyn-based artist and professorial sign painter, Stephen Powers aka ESPO (featured), is currently in Brussels where he’s setting up his solo show titled Visual Blues at Alice Gallery. For his second exhibition with the gallery, he prepared a big mural installation on the walls of the showspace as well as his latest enamel paintings on aluminum (Metaltations), but the centerpieces of the show are smaller pieces popularly known as Daily Metaltations. These 10” x 8” enamel paintings are mostly based on sketches inspired by everyday problems and pleasures, often on the […]

Frieze Week NYC ’13: Frieze Art Fair – First Look

Frieze returned to New York City this weekend, and again put on an top-notch art fair that challenges the dominance of The Armory Show. Like last year, the event was held on scenic Randall’s Island and featured many of the world’s most respected galleries and artists. We visited the fair multiple times over the weekend, and will post about specific booths that caught our eye. But first, here’s a general overview of some of what we enjoyed from Frieze NYC 2013.
