Films: “OBEY THE GIANT” – The Story of Shepard Fairey

Last year, we shared a project with you that was asking for funding on kickstarter – the first narrative film based on the story of Shepard Fairey. As some of you may know (or even supported), the money raiser was fully funded – and now, the finished movie has been released online on the official website. Take a look below as the hard work of Julian Marshall, a student at Shep’s alma mater RISD, and his friends is finally realized. Discuss Shepard Fairey here.

Openings: Kazuki Takamatsu @ Corey Helford

Last weekend at the Corey Helford Gallery, the ghostly works of Kazuki Takamatsu were put on display at the opening reception. Patrons and collectors in Los Angeles took in what we already saw from Basel Week Miami last year – the almost glowing, mostly monochromatic portraits created through a personalized process by the Japanese artist. The topographical rendering is a result of both computer as well as traditional painting techniques and really make the image “pop” from the canvas. Openings: Ray Caesar @ Corey Helford (Circa)

Last weekend, CHG Circa presented a survey of the work of Ray Caesar (interviewed) – past and present. Featuring a mix of older limited editions as well as all new works, the Toronto-based digital artist reacquainted his fans in Los Angeles with his disturbing and surreal portraiture. One of the rare artists we feature who has made the unconventional medium a success, Caesar has proven his unusual and unique vision shines through no matter how he choses to express it. Openings: TrustoCorp – “The Future Is Blight” @ Lebasse

Over the weekend, the TrustoCorp collective opened their solo show entitled The Future Is Blight at the LeBasse Projects in Culver City. Along with all new works featuring their subversive humor, many crafted from modified corporate logos, the LA-based crew also included large-scale versions of the co-branded cereal box (a collaboration with Shepard Fairey) that they have been surreptitiously placing at local supermarkets. They also revealed other boxes created with artists like The London Police and Dave Flores as well as a massive mural detailing the locations of The […]

Openings: Travis Louie – “Monsters On Their Day Off” @ Roq La Rue

Travis Louie’s (interviewed) newest solo exhibition titled Monsters On Their Day Off opened April 9th at the Roq la Rue Gallery. Referencing century old photographs, Louie brings his impossibly rendered style to the Seattle gallery, depicting monsters in their down time, when they’re not playing monster.  The acrylics are so exquisitely rendered that the images appear soft and delicate, just as a photograph might appear had it been taken in the late 19th century. Patrons were leaning in close all night to decipher just how Travis can […]

Les Bains Douches artistic residency (Paris)

Paris is a city full of mysterious places. A year after the Mausolee project was revealed (covered here), the mythical Bains Douches, cradle of the Parisian night life, has been transformed in an ephemeral artistic residency curated by Magda Danyz. Closed since 2010, the site is due to be demolished on April, 30 2013. For the past four months, graffiti artists and others have been invited to perform and reinvent the 3000 square meters. Due to safety reasons, it can not be open to the public but luckily AM has been […]

Showing: Marion Peck – “Animals” @ Michael Kohn Projects

Through April 27th, Michael Kohn Gallery’s new project space (dubbed Michael Kohn Projects) at 7270 Beverly Blvd will have a Marion Peck solo on display. Featuring eleven new works entitled simply Animals, the show has the LA-based painter continuing her surreal rendering of anthropomorphized creatures. Head over if you have a chance yourself, but if not, check out some of our photos below… Photo credit: saL for Arrested Motion. Discuss this show here. Discuss Marion Peck here.

Streets: Jeff Soto & Maxx242 (Berlin) – Part I

It looks like Jeff Soto (interviewed) is scratching his street art itch again (see Hawaii) with a new mural in Berlin, this time with his friend Maxx242. Bringing back the reoccurring owl that is seen in his work (like last year in Richmond), Soto will be combining his skills with his fellow Riverside-based artist friend Maxx242. The two are in town for Pictoplasma, which starts Saturday (April 13th) – so stop by if you are in town to hear them speak. Discuss Jeff Soto here.

Preview: Last Rites Gallery 5 Year Anniversary Show

On Saturday night (April 13th), the Last Rites in New York will be celebrating their five year anniversary with a massive group show. Known for championing the dark arts, the gallery will once again house the works from artists who have ventured into the shadows of their mind to create works for the exhibition. The lineup includes Stefano Alcantara, Esao Andrews (above), Shawn Barber, Nick Baxter, Matthew Bone, Timothy Boor, Scott G. Brooks, Patrick Byers, Santiago Caruso, David Choquette, Colin Christian, Sas Christian, Christopher Conte, […]

Openings: Takashi Murakami – “ARHAT” @ Blum & Poe

Last night, AM headed over to the Culver City art district for a special preview of Takashi Murakami’s solo exhibition at Blum & Poe. Introducing a impressive new selection of painting and sculptural works (some of which he shared on Instagram in the past month), the internationally prolific contemporary Japanese artist will be dazzling his LA fans with much fresh imagery during the public opening tomorrow (April 13th, 6-8pm). Highlights include a series of pieces drawing inspiration from an ancient tale of Buddhist monks confronting […]
