Preview: Victor Castillo – “Under Heavy Measures” @ Merry Karnowsky

This Saturday night (February 2nd) the Merry Karnowsky Gallery in Los Angeles will be home to a new solo show from Victor Castillo. Under Heavy Measures will consist of paintings on paper & canvas, sculptures, and sketches from the locally-based artist all created in the deceptively innocent style of illustrations for children’s stories. The title refers to his feeling that “the scales of power have become oppressive: inequality grows, the protests increase globally, and the brutality with which these demonstrations are repressed is also amplified” […]

The untimely recent passing of Justin Van Hoy has had an huge impact on the artistic community he was associated with. The Los Angeles based gallerist, artist and designer sadly lost his long battle with cancer in November shortly after his book Milk and Honey: Contemporary Art in California was published. Close friends Alex Lukas and Bill McRight have organised a tribute to Justin in the form of Walking with The Dutch Giant – A Benefit for The Leukemia and Lymphoma Society Honoring Justin Van Hoy at Philadelphia’s Space 1026. Studio Visit / Auction: RETNA

Over the weekend, AM was invited to a special event presented by New Image Art & Robert Galstian at RETNA’s (featured) studio timed nicely to coincide with the Art Los Angeles Contemporary. Along with a look at his spacious work space and refreshments, guests were also allowed to participate in an auction of available works to benefit Inner-City Arts. Preview: Dan May – “Patient Season”

Going public early this week will be Dan May’s (interviewed) latest selection of work, collectively entitled Patient Season. The new drawings and paintings ranging in size from 6″ X 6″ to 18″ X 24″ will be available online and will bring together themes of hope, peace, love, mystery, and intrigue. After hitting up the iconic Bowery & Houston wall in the fall, the artists known as How & Nosm are ready to take their style indoors for NYC. This Friday, the boys will be premiering a large body of fresh works at Jonathan Levine Gallery’s new pop-up space (557 w. 23rd Street). Later next month, the Cella Gallery will be hosting a group show entitled Something Wicked This Way Comes featuring artists who have practice rendering the surreal and macabre. Curated by Stephanie Chefas, the roster includes Annie Owens, Christian Rex van Minnen, Christine Wu, Chrystal Chan, David Ball, Fulvio Di Piazza, Jana Brike, Jessica Ward, Judith Supine, and Michael Page (interviewed) – whose painting of some corporate types you see above. Following directly on from our studio visit with John Bocksel leading up to Curio‘s Sea Of Blasphemy group exhibition opening on 26th January, filmmaker Jarcob Arden McClure just finished this video profile of artist Bill McRight, who is also participating in the grouping along with Ben Venom, and Bonnie Brenda Scott. The video gives an interesting behind the scenes look into McRight’s studio as well as a history of how he came to concentrate his practice of making shanks and improvised weapons. Upcoming: Tim Biskup for “MAS: ATTACK” @ LA Mart

Tonight (January 26th) in Los Angeles, LA Mart (1933 S. Broadway) will be hosting a group exhibition entitled MAS: ATTACK (Mutual Appreciation Society). The one night event features a large roster of artists including Tim Biskup who will be contributing the pieces seen above including the 48″ x 48″ painting entitled Dawn which seem combines old and new techniques.
