Openings: “Nocturnes: Romancing the Night” @ National Arts Club

Last week, the National Arts Club in New York hosted the opening of their Nocturnes: Romancing the Night group exhibition. For this showing, a selection of artists including Odd Nerdrum, Steven Assael, Marshall Arisman, Bo Bartlett, Jefferson Haman, Alexandra Pacula, Richard Scott Young, Alexander Roloff, Martin Wittfooth (above), and Jason Yarmosky were asked to submit their painting that depicted night scenes or subjects blurred in a veil of twilight – a nocturne painting. Releases: Mike Sutfin – “Servants of Sauron” Print

For those Lord of the Rings fans out there, tomorrow (January 24th) at a random time, Mike Sutfin will be releasing a new print entitled Servants of Sauron through Mondo. The limited edition serigraph (sized at 24″ x 36″) comes in two versions – the regular (edition of 285 / $50) pictured here and the variant (edition of 155 / $75). Preview: Art Stage Singapore

One is the Art Los Angeles Contemporary (more on this soon) and the other happens on the other side of the globe in Asia. Upcoming: Jean-Michel Basquiat @ Gagosian (New York)

Coming up on February 7th at the 555 West 24th Street location of New York’s Gagosian Gallery is a new showing of work from Jean-Michel Basquiat. The last showing from The Radiant Child at the blue-chip gallery was at the London location during last year’s Olympics (covered). Tomorrow (January 23rd) at noon, Paper Monster will be releasing a series of new editioned variants with Swoon. With the opening set for January 25th at the Eleanor Harwood Gallery, the time is right to preview Adam Friedman’s newest body of work. Showing: Michael Johansson – “Still Lifes” @ Flat Gallery

Currently showing at the Flat Gallery in Milan is a solo from Sweden-based artist Michael Johansson entitled Still Lifes. On view through February 24th, the exhibition features a continuation of the conceptual artist’s three-dimensional work that deals with ideas of space and form. The re-purposing of everyday objects into perfect cubes (among other sculptural installations) arranged by different hues strikes a visually intriguing balance throughout the showspace. During the fall, Tim Biskup had a big solo at Antonio Colombo Arte Contemporanea Gallery in Milan. The show featured all kinds of different types of artworks – from limited edition porcelain figures, to big graphite drawings on the walls, to drawings and paintings of different sizes, using all kinds of different techniques and styles.
