Basel Week Miami ’12: Holton Rower Performance @ Fresh Basel

While bringing you a look at the Fresh Basel exhibition (curated by The Hole / Kathy Grayson) held at the the historic 1920’s waterfront Villa Vecchia estate during Basel Week Miami, we mentioned that there would be special live performances held throughout the showing. One of artists included was Holton Rower, known for his pour paintings, which he ably demonstrated with a session that included a model as his canvas (sponsored by Playboy which totally makes sense). Take a look at the rest of the photos below… […]

Openings: “Color or Colour” @ Charles Bank Gallery

This past month, we brought you the preview of Color or Colour at Charles Bank Gallery in NYC. This well composed group exhibition included the works of London based Ben Eine among others. Eine is best  known for his large-scale outdoor typography inspired works with a color theory combination that have Pantone designers batting their eyelashes. Traveling relentlessly over the past couple years, Eine settled into New York City, just long enough to bring the house with his other artists in the show, most notably Lee Baker. […]

Openings: Sarah Joncas – “Taking Over” @ Last Rites Gallery

Earlier this month, the Last Rites Gallery in New York hosted the opening reception welcoming all new works from Sarah Joncas (interviewed). Entitled Taking Over, the new paintings see her semi-autobiographical portraits embrace a darker side with dangerous creatures, eerie transformations, and morbid scenes added to her imagery, which is not surprising seeing the setting (and their penchant for the dark arts) in which they are being displayed. Check out some photos below as well as video interview… Discuss Sarah Joncas here.

Openings: Sam Flores – “Lion and the Lamb” @ Fifty24SF

Last week, Fifty24SF hosted Sam Flores’s long awaited San Francisco exhibition entitled Lion and the Lamb. This is the local artist’s first solo showing in the city in nearly 5 years, and he decided to showcase his new body of work with the company that he has consistently collaborated with in the past on his 12 Grain clothing line (Upper Playground). Fans queued up the street to meet the long admired artist, and were greeted by a custom wall division installation as well as a […]

Videos: Cai Guo-Qiang – “Black Christmas Tree” @ The Smithsonian

Just in time for Christmas, Cai Guo-Qiang has brought his pyrotechnics skills back to America (see Los Angeles earlier this year). Commissioned by the Arthur M. Sackler Gallery at the Smithsonian in Washington DC, the renowned Chinese contemporary artist executed three separate explosions in a performance entitled Black Christmas Tree described as acupuncture treatment for arts in the city. Surprisingly, the tree is still alive post-detonation and will be re-planted elsewhere. Enjoy the video below… Via Designboom. Discuss Cai Guo-Qiang here.

Releases: Phil Frost Originals @ The Pancake Epidemic

It’s not often that you see work from Phil Frost available these days, especially at solo shows – with the last we have seen being in 2010 (covered). But, thanks to The Pancake Epidemic, you can now now add some small originals from the NY legend just in time for Christmas. Check out these originals on paper, made from 2005 – 2008, which all feature Frost’s signature patterns and imagery. Head over here for those interested… Discuss Phil Frost here.

Openings: Bob Dob – “Mouseketeer Army” @ La Luz de Jesus

Back in November, the La Luz de Jesus gallery in Los Angeles hosted all new works from Bob Dob (alongside Nathan Ota’s solo). Entitled Mouseketeer Army, the showing featured 76 new paintings that could be arranged together into the shape of his surreal take on the American Flag and were thematically based on a back story of the radical Youth International Party invading Disneyland. Rounding out the exhibition were a series of large-scale three dimensional works based on the Southern California-based artist’s most popular characters. Discuss Bob Dob here.

Openings: Paul Insect – “Out of Chaos” @ Opera Gallery (NYC)

United Kingdom’s Paul Insect (featured) recently crossed the pond to New York’s Opera Gallery to present a new body of work entitled Out of Chaos. This expansive new show featured a cornucopia for the eyes as Mr. Insect showed viewers the extent of his true talents with numerous mediums on display – from paintings & sculptures to silkscreens & stencils. Even after our recent studio visit to Insect’s temporary studio space in Brooklyn, he managed to surprise us with even more gems at the opening. Check out […]

Basel Week Miami ’12: Matthew Marks Gallery @ Art Basel

The only thing you need to know about Matthew Marks Gallery is that it represents Jasper Johns, (arguably) the greatest living artist in the world. Looking further, you will see that the gallery also represents other top artists as well. Its booth at Art Basel this year includes an orange, two-panel painting by Ellsworth Kelly, new sculptures by Charles Ray and Katharina Fritsch, three recent paintings by Paul Sietsema, new sculptures by Darren Almond, as well as pieces by Willem de Kooning, Luigi Ghirri, Thomas Demand, […]

Openings: Laura Ball – “Minotaur” @ David B. Smith

Last week, the David B. Smith Gallery presented all new watercolors from Laura Ball collectively entitled Minotaur. While exploring the PULSE art fair (covered) in Miami, we came across several of the paintings that will be in the show which we shared with you here. Now with these new photos, you will be able to appreciate the new entire body of work which features her signature creative amalgamations of smaller creatures to form larger animals.
