Openings: Skullphone – “London, XX12” @ Ivory & Black

A couple weeks ago, the Ivory & Black in London opened their Skullphone showing entitled London, XX12. Featuring a new body of work created with his special technique utilizing dots and layered clear coats, the continuing series initially looks like digital LEDs from a distance – a reference to the street artist’s claim to fame – his digital billboard takeovers. Also included were some sculptures based on molds of his feet as well as some associated items. Discuss Skullphone here.

Streets: Komafest (Part III) – Conor Harrington

After a look at the street pieces Ethos and Vhils put up for Komafest in Norway, we turn our attention to Conor Harrington (interviewed). The UK-based painter worked on several murals while he was in Vardø which featured imagery similar to what was seen during his recent London solo (covered) as well has mix of photorealistic and abstract colonial portraiture. Opening this Friday (July 26th), Petit Mal is a solo show from Candice Tripp (interviewed) at Black Rat Projects, with whom she released a print earlier this year if you remember. We’ve been looking for a large body of work from the UK-based painter ever since her show at Joshua Liner, and the new work does not disappoint. What a banner month for street art fans starting with the Os Gemeos showing at the Boston ICA at the beginning of the August and then an exhibition from Bay-area legend Barry McGee at the end at the BAM/PFA (UC Berkeley Art Museum and Pacific Film Archive). On the 1st of August, the Boston Institute of Contemporary Art will continue its innovative and pioneering programing with the opening of Brazilian street muralists Os Gemeos first ever solo museum exhibition in the United States. Tomorrow (July 23rd) at 2 pm (EST), Daniel Danger (interviewed) will be releasing his latest print entitled i’m not aware if you’re aware of what a distance can become… The limited edition offering (a run of 200) measures 15 x 30 inches, is an eight color screen print, and will cost $100 with the variant (a run of 20 on stained birch) costing $500. Last month, the Jonathan LeVine Gallery in New York hosted an opening reception for surreal Sicilian artist Fulvio di Piazza (a previous subject of our Art Focus). Ashes to Ashes is the painter’s powerful debut show in the United States featuring his riveting landscapes of floating islands in a world covered in ash and fire. Coming up in October, the David B. Smith Gallery will be hosting a new solo exhibition from Kris Lewis (interviewed). If his previous shows (see 2011 & 2009) at the Denver showspace are any indication, the California-based artist will be bringing a selection of enchanting oil paintings with him. Curated by Coates and Scarry, the exhibition entitled Unnatural-Natural History recently launched at the Royal West of England Academy with many of the participating artists present at the opening. Featuring paintings, photography, drawings, sculptures and installations, 38 local and international artists are currently displaying their artistic interpretation of an alternative world. Sculptor and photographer Jason deCaires Taylor recently made his premiere at Jonathan Levine Gallery with a solo exhibition entitled Human Nature. The British born artist who grew up with the coral reefs of Malaysia is known for taking his talents of altering environments to the ocean. Utilizing specialized PH neutral materials, Jason creates cement based sculptures and lays them in nature’s aquatic settings to create artificial reefs.
