Openings: “Sur-Realism” @ Arcadia Fine Arts

Earlier this month, Arcadia Fine Arts in New York hosted a new wave of representational painters who are challenging tradition in a group exhibition entitled Sur-Realism. Included in the lineup were Rick Berry, Ryan Bradley, John Brosio (above), Nancy Depew, Brian Despain, Craig Elliot, Shown Fields, Danny Galieote, Andrew Hem, Damon Lehrer, Adam Miller, Billy Norrby, Michael Rosenfeld, Laura Sanders, Linnea Strid, Eric White, Aron Wiesenfeld, and Martin Wittfooth. Openings: Andrew Schoultz – “Ex Uno Plura” @ Eric Firestone Gallery

Over this past weekend, San Francisco-based artist Andrew Schoultz visited the Hamptons at Eric Firestone Gallery to unveil a new body of work consisting of his remixed flags. Entitled Exo Uno Plura, the show explores the kinetic compositions referencing the political turmoil in the nation. Further pushing his skills, Andrew told us he worked and weathered the flags to age them. Releases: Ron English – “American Depress” @ Kidrobot

Ron English (featured) recently created a new vinyl sculpture with toy maker Kidrobot for their ultra limited Kidrobot Black line. Entitled American Depress, the 12-inch figure depicts Ron’s version of a bloated Mickey Mouse ensnared in a Amex “Black Card” credit trap. Tomorrow night, June 29th, Land Rover Anaheim Hills will be hosting a benefit group exhibition to benefit Big Life Foundation, an anti-poaching organization. Openings: Karl Lagerfeld x Chanel – “Little Black Jacket” Photography Exhibition

AM recently caught The Little Black Jacket photo exhibition in New York. Presented by Chanel in the old Deitch Projects location, the pop up show featured the portraiture of renowned photographer Karl Lagerfeld and his work with the fashion label. Streets: Spencer Tunick (Munich Opera Festival)

American photographer Spencer Tunick, known for organizing large-scale public nude photoshoots, has struck again – this time in Germany. The human installation created from 1,700 individuals marked the start of Munich’s 2012 opera season by gathering in formations recalling scenes from Richard Wagner’s opera Der Ring Des Nibelungen (The Ring of the Nibelung). Yes, Comic-Con is almost upon us again. As always with SDCC, there is bound to be some art-related news or exhibitions in association with the event. Upcoming: Travis Louie – “Spirits” @ Stranger Factory

Continuing to spread his strange creatures and special form of surreal vintage portraiture to unlikely locales, Travis Louie’s (interviewed) next solo will be in Albuquerque, New Mexico. We last covered the NY-based painter’s showing in Northampton, Massachusetts at William Baczek Fine Arts back in May, and now it looks like his black and white cast of bizarre characters will be headlining a show at the Stranger Factory in August entitled Spirits.
