ArtPadSF ’12 – “Highlights”

ArtPadSF hosted its second annual boutique art fair over the weekend, which coincides with ArtMrkt and SFFAF. Unlike your traditional art fair with booths, this one takes over the Phoenix Hotel in the heart of the Tenderloin District in San Francisco with each gallery taking up their own room in the hotel, which gives a more laid-back pop-up gallery vibe. Releases: Parra x Kidrobot – “Pierced” Figure

On June 7th, Kidrobot will be releasing (in-store and online) a new figure from Dutch artist Parra entitled Pierced. The 10-inch vinyl sculpture is inspired by the melodramatic cover art of romance novels and based on imagery from his original silkscreen artwork. The entwined figures which demonstrate the simultaneous pain and pleasure that many experience while in love will set collectors back $150 and will be limited to an edition of 300. Via mashKULTURE.

ArtMRKT San Francisco ’12 – “Highlights”

artMRKT is one of the art fairs taking place in San Francisco over the weekend, with over 70 modern and contemporary galleries at the Concourse Exhibition Center. Recently, the Paula Cooper Gallery exhibited a new series of minimalist-conceptual paintings and works on paper by Dan Walsh. In some ways similar to the late Sol Lewitt (whose work is also represented by Paula Cooper), Walsh uses a process-oriented approach to art, by first formulating a system of rules or structures, which then dictates the production of each piece. Releases: Saber – Large Lino Flag Triptych

Dedicated to making his art accessible to all his fans regardless of their economic status,  SABER (interviewed) has just released a set of flag lino prints priced affordably on his webstore. Available in red, green, and blue, the 6″ x 8″ editions are limited to 50 each and despite their price ($85), each hand finished. Showing: Kevin E. Taylor – “Kountər Pärt” @ Guerrero Gallery

Last weekend, the Guerrero Gallery introduced San Francisco art fans to the paintings of the locally-based Kevin E. Taylor. Entitled Kountər Pärt, the new work explores and questions the “functionality of natural and synthetic materials through visual compositions of formulated schematics.” Using architectural structures, mirrors, and visual aids, Taylor’s detailed works presents a curious mix of the natural world and modern objects that extend into the gallery environment with some paintings displayed on and alongside mirrors and wooden constructs. Preview: Melissa Cooke – “Surfaced” @ Koplin Del Rio

Culver City’s Koplin Del Rio will be presenting the second solo showing from Melissa Cooke at their gallery this Saturday night, May 19th. Entitled Surfaced, the new body of work comprising of powdered graphite on paper pieces explores the relationship between photography, painting and drawing in portraiture. Cooke takes photographs as she paints and pour liquids onto herself using her face as a canvas.
