Showing: “Vinyl Revisionists” @ Warner Brothers

The art of the album cover has a longstanding cultural and historic impact, both on contemporary society and new contemporary art. From the psychedelic album covers of the sixties to the gritty urban photographic hip hop album covers of the 90s, few mediums have been as unheralded yet impactful as these visual interpretations of the defining sounds of each generation. Warner Brothers Records in Burbank has recently opened a group show inviting artists to reinterpret their favorite albums and covers from the label’s expansive catalog. […]

Teaser: “Noteworthy Project Auction” @ Martha Otero Gallery

A couple months ago, we shared with you a project from Samsung where Tim Biskup was asked to re-imagine the sad face emoticon. It turns out other artists were asked to do the same thing with some of the other more common emoticons and acronyms including AJ Fosik, Megan Whitmarsh, Steven Harrington, Reza Ali, as well as Craig & Karl (see video after the jump). Now, the series of work produced for the Noteworthy Project will be auctioned off to benefit Peace First at a […]

Last week alongside Greg Simkin’s show at Merry Karnowsky, the works of Johnny Rodriguez (KMNDZ) collectively entitled One Step Beyond were also on display. This new set of paintings mark the first time Rodriguez has introduced human figures into imagery although signature touches like birds, bombs, beads, and palette are still evident. He states – “Aside from trying to push my art further and painting outside my comfort zone, the show is a love letter to all of my friends lost. It’s about sharing my […]

Studio Visits: Ian Francis – “10,000 Years From Now” @ Lazarides Rathbone

This Friday, Ian Francis (featured) will be unveiling a new series of works entitled 10,000 Years From Now at London’s Lazarides (Rathbone Place). On our recent journey around the globe, we had the pleasure to trek up to Bristol to visit Ian’s studio. While there, we saw numerous pieces as they were in progress including ones that highlighted his seductive figures and mysterious landscapes tugging at the boundaries between the literal and the abstract. Watching Ian work is simply amazing. From carefully rendered studies comes […]

Openings: ROA – “Hypnagogia” @ StolenSpace (Part II)

After bringing to you part one of our coverage of ROA’s showing with StolenSpace, we move from the main space to The Stone Masons at 17 Osborne Street London E1 6TD. This portion of Hypnagogia seemed to be more installation-based, filled with a bestiary of animals from the Belgium-based artist, cleverly dissected on found objects. As the title suggests, these visions of animalia could usually only be seen in the transitional state between wakefulness and sleep, but luckily for his fans, ROA has made it […]

Recently at Jonathan LeVine in New York, Nicola Verlato opened up his solo exhibition entitled How The West Was Won alongside a solo from EVOL (covered). The series of new oil paintings from the Italian-born, Los Angeles-based artist show a talent for dramatic compositions and attention to detail that remind the viewer of old master paintings but remixed for modern time. The work follows a thematic tone that “refers to the culture clash between monotheism and polytheism throughout human history, a battle that the artist believes to […]
