Teaser: Greg Simkins @ Merry Karnowsky

Coming up in April, the Merry Karnowsky Gallery will be hosting a solo exhibition from Greg Simkins (featured). The last time we saw a large body of work from the LA-based artist, it was all the way up in Canada (covered). For now, here is a peek in-studio of what he’s working on for his home-city fans, but we’ll have more for you as the show draws closer. Discuss Greg Simkins here.

POW WOW ’12: Suitman

For this year’s POW WOW, we see the return of performance artist, Young Kim aka Suitman. The versatile man of many talents continued expanding his longstanding suit-photography series which he also explored during last year’s Pow Wow. With all the portraits created from the attendees from the opening night a year ago, Suitman pasted up and hand-finished two site specific outdoor murals to be displayed in the neighborhood of Kaka’ako thus giving a “distinguished” face to the event’s name. On March 23rd, Copro Gallery will be hosting the opening for a whole new body of work from Leslie Ditto that is based thematically on the Asian culture’s superstition, mythology, and folklore. Entitled Riding The Dragon, this series of paintings highlights her love for modern fantasy and surreal art along with her self-taught techniques gleaned from studying the “Old Masters” such as Leonardo Da Vinci, Rubens, Raphael, and Rembrandt. AM stopped by Bar Lane Studios in York to take a look at Claire Hind & Gary Winters’ collaborative installation and exhibition entitled Kong Lear. The title, and also the subject matter is a juxtaposition of imagery from the celebrated tale of King Kong interwoven with texts from King Lear, and also includes new writing. POW WOW ’12: Preview

Besides all the walls being beautified around industrial district of Kaka’ako in Hawaii, Loft In Space will also be opening up a gallery show tonight (6-10pm) that will put the indoor skills of each artist to the test. Besides some canvas pieces from most POW WOW participants, two other side projects will open on the second floor of the showspace.
