Video: Cai Guo-Qiang – “Saraab” Opening Fireworks @ Arab Museum of Modern Art

To celebrate the opening of his Saraab (mirage) exhibition a couple weeks ago at the Arab Museum of Modern Art (Mathaf) in Qatar, Chinese artist Cai Guo-Qiang put on his largest explosive performance of the last three years. Using perfectly timed microchip-controlled explosions, the renowned contemporary artist transformed the desert landscape and sky into his canvas with some beautifully orchestrated smoke and fire designs. Releases: Olly Moss x Studio Ghibli x Mondo: “My Neighbor Totoro” Screenprints

Tomorrow, December 16th, Mondo will be offering up two new limited editions from Olly Moss featuring imagery from the whimsical and beloved film My Neighbor Totoro from Hayao Miyazaki. The release of the 20″ x 36″ 8-color screenprints coincides with a 15-title, 25-year retrospective film marathon from Japan’s Studio Ghibli, which plays at the IFC Center in New York City from December 16th to January 12th. Events: Tauba Auerbach – “[2,3]” Book Launch Party @ Printed Matter

We recently attended a party at New York’s Printed Matter to celebrate the long-awaited release of Tauba Auerbach’s [2,3]. The small, artist-book shop was filled to capacity that night with people eager to pick up their pre-ordered copies, those curious to see the final product for themselves and others just wanting to wish the artist congratulations on a job well done. This Saturday, December 17th, Sylvia Ji (interviewed) will be transporting her fans to another time and place when she opens Gilded Roses at the Corey Helford Gallery in Los Angeles. Openings: C215 – “Smoke Gets in Your Eyes” @ Shooting Gallery

Last Saturday, Shooting Gallery opened the doors to Parisian street stencil artist, C215’s latest solo show, Smoke Gets in Your Eyes (previewed). The show is inspired by cigarette iconography and advertisements that lie and typically depict affluent people enjoying a smoke in order to sell their products to the common folk and working class. The stencil pieces in the show consists of fake adverts that depict everyday people who are actually smoking the cigarettes and are the targets of these corporations, but are never shown. […]

Releases: Mia Araujo – “Sleeping Sickness” Print

Tomorrow afternoon, December 15th, at 1pm (Pacific Time), Mia Araujo (interviewed) will be releasing her Sleeping Sickness print in two editions, both signed and numbered. The more limited version will be larger at 16″ x 24″, priced at $150, and in a run of 25.  The smaller one (8″ x 12″) will be limited to 75 and cost $65.
